Aftermarket carplay on 2017 RX350
#1487
Hi there, I'm considering buying an aftermarket carplay unit for my 2017 rx 350.
User experience:
- Does map audio work while listening to OEM radio?
- Do map directions show up on the heads-up display screen?
- Is the Bluetooth call quality on par with OEM?
- Is the music quality on par with OEM (Mark Levinson)?
- How do you get into CarPlay mode from car startup? Is it finicky?
- How would you rate the design of the units start-up screen?
- Are you able to see the overhead camera view when at rest in carplay?
Cost:
- Financial: how much for the unit?
- Time: how much time does it take to install? Is installed by a dealer or self-installed?
Units to test:
- ZZ-2
- Honfox
- ...
Cheers

1. For 2017 Lexus RX you can use the FM radio and be in VLine / VLite mode for CarPlay or Android Auto at the same time.
2. The directions will not show up on OEM heads-up display
3. Bluetooth quality through CarPlay is vary, there are settings that you can adjust for microphone gain. Some users are happy, the others prefer the OEM BT for phone calls
4. The music quality is on par with OEM
5. To get to CarPlay mode you press AUX on your stereo. If you stop driving being in CarPlay mode, the next time you start driving - the stereo will be in the same CarPlay mode.
6. All original cameras keep working the way they designed to work.
Cost: $499.95 - $679.95 (VLite or VLine)
Installation can be done by the specialist, or the user, depending on the user's technical ability.
The GROM VLine VL2 and VLine VT2 systems for CarPlay or Android Auto for 2017 Lexus RX with the factory navigation are available here:

Please update us on your install and experience. I'm pulling the trigger soon, just couldn't decide between the Vlite and the aftermarket display that is plug n play with AA and CarPlay pre installed for around $600. I would get more bang for my buck because I would also be upgrading from the 8" screen to the 12.3". Just not sure on a purchase directly from China and the quality of the unit.

For $600 we can't even make the housing in North America, let alone a reverse engineered device with many electronics...

Road Top carplay unit audio issue
Hi, I have just finished installing the Road Top Carplay unit for my 2018 RX 450h. I have also connected the Audio Ground to Ground as per the seller's recommendation. The audio is great when playing music from Spotify, but when playing a radio station in iHeartRadio (Z100), the volume is very low. The audio quality from Waze and Google Map is also pretty crappy. Apple map audio is very good. Does anyone know if there's a setting I can change to make the iHeartRadio volume the same as Spotify, also anything I could do for the Waze and Google Map audio quality? I have set the Road Top unit to use 800+h loudness and also lx570 microphone setting. I am using Apple Carplay

Check if you can get back to the factory UI settings. Once there, go to the Audio and adjust the audio settings for the mode that is taken over by CarPlay.
