Hello everyone,
I recently bought a 2016 RX450H (phase 1). Unfortunately the unit don't have Carplay or Android Auto.
I understand that starting 2019 (phase 2) and upward, the infotainment unit was upgraded and carplay was added.
Coming from Volkswagen world where everything is plug and play withing the same generation, I was surprised to se that nobody tried to retrofit the phase 2 unit into the phase 1 car.
The argument that everybody used is that it cost a lot. However, now you can find a lot of second hand unit that cost around 700 which is the same price as the third party boxes (grom vline, beat sonic etc.). And nothing beat the OEM feel...
I'm pretty sure that someone had the same idea. Maybe someone can help with russian/Chinese/Japanese sources ?

CarPlay on the factory car stereo of Lexus RX 2016-2019 GS 2016-2020 Android Auto on the factory car stereo of Lexus RX 2016-2019 GS 2016-2020 Android Auto music and maps on the factory car stereo of Lexus RX 2016-2019 GS 2016-2020
Tried to search the issue in the forum but doesn't know what the keyword should be so figured I should post it here instead. I'm not a very technical person so I bought a carplay box from an auto shop for my RX350 2017 and got it installed. However, I noticed the carplay screen doesn't cover the entire screen of the lexus (shown below). The shop doesn't know how to fix it and won't give me any refund, so now I'm stuck with this issue. Anyone knows of a solution? Or I will just have to buy another box and go to a different shop to replace this one?
Thank you!
The bottom from the original screen keeps showing up
Just installed an aftermarket android box with Apple Carplay dongle to my RX350. The dongle also works with android auto. I dont have an android phone, so this post is mostly about Apple Carplay.
Pros: looks and works like OEM, keep all factory settings/features (e.g. control with remote touch, birds eyes view, Mark Levinson, use cars microphone, steering wheel control), keeps all factory hardware, plugs and play, play music via cars bluetooth and control/browse playlist with the carplay interface.
Cons: apple maps navigation/siri sometimes will be played on the external speaker come with the kit, sometimes need to change the output to bluetooth on the iphone after siri/phone call (which is a bit annoying but acceptable). There is a setting to connect the android box's bluetooth to the Lexus bluetooth. See attached for instruction to turn "Master-On" on setting. All sounds now go through car's speakers.

I had a similar issue with my Roadtop CarPlay system. In one of the settings screens it had ability to move the screen up and down. However, ended up needing to use a different set of DIP switches plus the screen movement to align the image properly.
In Toyota would they didn't make things plug and play friendly. They typically make all components specific for that package and model and year and with changes all those also change.
I know Germans are MUCH more flexible when it comes to that. You can actually enable features just by software in many German cars.
Your only option for adding CarPlay is an aftermarket add-on module, like the ones listed in this forum.
I have the Roadtop in my 2016 and I'm pretty happy with it. Price wise it didn't break the bank either and easy to install.
I am still not sure exactly what carplay is all about. I have an Android Samsung. Does my phone have to be physically connected to the glove USB for carplay? Or can it be bluetoothed? Thanks.

For Android phones, you will use Android Auto - either wired via USB or wireless. It is the way to project the phone's functionality, which is essential for driving, to the car stereo. The most used functions while driving are maps - Google Maps, Waze, etc.., music apps such as Spotify, Pandora, etc..., messaging and calls, and the voice assistant. For Android phones, it will be Google Voice Assistant that you activate by pressing the button on the steering wheel (for the VLine VL2 system it will be TRACK UP on the steering wheel).
You can see how Android Auto works on the factory stereo of Lexus RX 2016-2022 on this video:
Seeking Your Experience w/VLine2 CarPlay for your 2019 RX w/Nav
Hello,
I just bought a used 2019(!!) and would really like to add CarPlay. I've seen a number of posts inquiring about GROM VL2 w/CarPlay, but surprisingly very few from users that have actually installed it. Looking for both positives and negatives about VL2 (LEX78VL2). How happy are you with it?

Thank you for your interest in GROM product and technology! We are happy to answer any specific question you may have about our products. We also have the installation and demo videos that we can share.
Installation:
Your stereo does not have a touchscreen, so you will use the Lexus mouse control to operate CarPlay. You can also use Siri voice control to start navigation, make a phone call, send a text message, or play music. The CarPlay will work full screen in your 2019 Lexus RX.
