Default Car did not auto-brake and I backed into a car

Backing out of my garage I hit a car on my driveway to the left of me. My garage driveway is on an angle. All the warning beeps were going off but I guess I have gotten used to them because the front sensors go off as the front passes through the door. My drivers side bumper caught the passenger side rear quarter panel of a guest's car that was on my driveway. I don't understand why the auto brake didn't take over. I have backed out of parking spaces before and it auto - braked for cars that had already passed behind me.

Looking at the manual and illustrations, I believe the auto brake on RCTA works when a vehicle is approaching (moving), while Park Assist is telling you an obstacle is there, showing the location on the overlay display. The ICS (sonar) would have worked on a fixed object directly in front or behind, I guess as the protection against a wrong pedal as you park at a building. Too bad but I can appreciate how it happens. Even a mirror may not have given you a view of the angled car.

The Park Sensors are proximity detectors, if you are within range > '4 it goes off and continues until you separate.

The Blind Spot Monitor/Rear Cross Traffic Alert are motion detectors.
If the other car is moving '60 away it warns,
if the other car stops < '5 away it stops warning.

Never rely on it to brake. It is driver-assist, so it will not do the work for you.

It sometimes will not auto brake if you are stepping on the brake pedal.

That’s why lexus is not an autonomous vehicle, unlike Tesla. Lexus also does not have the side parking sensors (other luxury cars have 6 sensors in front and 6 in the rear, instead of 4s)

I think auto-brake only works when you do not brake at all. If you are braking, the vehicle thinks it is under your control.

That could have been the problem.

This is not true for at least 2019 models. When I am parallel parking the auto-brake will automatically depress the brake regardless of whether my foot is on the brake or not. It freaked out when I got too close on the front and when reversing. I rely on the parking cameras more than the "sonar" system which will push the boundaries more than the sonar system.
