4RX and theft
#136
I responded to a similar thread with the same. I have a 2022 Rx350, but live in a USA local with a less dynamic auto theft history.
Everything I’m reading about CANbus related thefts illustrates that Ontario/Canada vehicle owners are overdue for class action suits against manufacturer-USA/Canada.com. I mean really… aren’t there more than a few multiple-incident victims out there?
So… here’s why a class action suit win is a no-brainer:
Vehicles are sheet metal built around a computer.
How many times a year does your Windows/Unix/Apple computer receive security upgrades? Well… it should be several. Computer providers fully understand the rational of secure access enforcement. The legal basis supporting automobile computer security neglect is glaring.
The fact that a guy with 30 minutes of training plus (perhaps) a cheap CANbus terminal can create a key to your car in just a few minutes with (wait for it) NO ACCESS AUTHENTICATION is a gross miscarriage of computer access security.
There is an extensive history of secure computer access via necessary secure authentication which automakers have ignored.
There is also no doubt a bit of collusion in part by manufacturers and dealer servicers. Think on this: auto dealers’ main revenue is from vehicle service. How many weeks or months do your ransacked vehicles spend in a dealer shop?
I suppose vehicle theft owners in Canada are anger deprived.
Look, CANbus access to a vehicle’s engine management unit (emu) to the point of making a key should require a secure digital key exchange between an embedded security client in the emu and a digital key server. That would require designated staff at a dealer to make a connection with automaker-USA/CANADA.com to execute a digital key exchange/authentication between the car’s emu and the automaker. Bogus keys getting made? Well detective, go to those specific guys.
May sound like extra trouble to get a key made, but hey maybe doing without a car for months isn’t so bad.

CANBUS theft: A UK Lexus statement
We seem to have been waiting a long time for this.
Does it apply to other markets?
When will they have the upgrades available?
