Default Dinged my baby - how bad is it?

Hey all

I had an absolute brain fart and dinged my RX. First the story - please go ahead and laugh at my expense, it’s well deserved. So this morning I’m picking up my boss at the airport for an important customer visit and I get there a couple minutes early and go into the parking garage. The machine is broken and I don’t get a parking ticket, but I can’t back out because there’s cars behind me. And my boss is incessantly calling again and again wondering where I am!!

Anyway, I had a complete brain freeze - I opened the door to tell the folks behind me to back up, and I stepped out of the car with it still in reverse. I guess luckily, the door was open, it caught on a pillar and just stopped the car within a foot or two of when I got out. So yeah it could have been worse......

So the damage - the bottom plastic trim broke and came off. The door is dented. It closes and even locks but doesnt seal as well - there’s a lot more wind noise.

How bad do we think is it - is it a clear cut insurance claim (we have comprehensive coverage), or can I get it done a bit on the cheap? I’m reasonably handy - I can take off and put back on trim pieces but I’m not comfortable with dent removal.

thanks

Unless you're a body-and-fender guy, I don't see you fixing that. This is going to affect the value of your car, so I'd get it fixed correctly.

Get it fixed the right way, that's what insurance is for.

When I saw the thread title I was expecting like a dime sized door ding.

Glad you guys are having fun . I thought there was hope for something like taking out all the trim and having a pro dent out the door. Didn’t realize it was for sure a replacement.

you can check ebay... if you have a shop.. or you are comfortbale with it.. buy a new door shell.. and transfer components over.

i realize that the the door color doesnt match - i only meant it to be an example that getting a "used" door is cheaper and possible..
or you can go through insurance..

yeah that’s probably a bit outside my comfort zone, especially with the blending part. Oh well - insurance it is.....

If the pis with the door shut is fully closed and the gap is that big,,,,,,,,,then the door is toast maybe the hinge too,

Depends on the paint condition, a replacement door might show obvious color difference.

Well, the OP is submitting it to insurance. Instead of pointing out how many different ways it's hard to paint match, I say let's wish him luck and have faith the body shop can do the work. Let's give him hope that the car he loves will be fine.

What I would do is see if you can find a salvage door on eBay in the same color of yours. You can probably pick one up for about $700-$900 bucks.

Just an FYI, this is an at fault collision claim not a comprehensive claim.

With a good shop the paint will be perfect.
