Once set to the on position it will always put the E-Brake on. The Hold button only works if you activate it while the car is running. Thereafter every time you come to a stop the brakes hold you whether you are going up/down or on a level road. I don't see the need for it all the time but some like the feature and would like to see it come every time they start the car.
