Default Tailgate only opens half way

Recently my tailgate (2017 Rx350) is only opening half way. I have to physically push it up by hand to avoid hitting my head. Is this a programable issue?

Yes.

But I'm sure it's also possible that the lift mechanism can fail.

Go to the Lexus customization Menu. And in there you will find a setting from 1 to 5 for the height of the door. Move it back to 5

If I remember correctly, if you push the door to the top it automatically resets to 5, the highest setting. If yours does not, you have a problem.

Yes - manually pull the tailgate to your preferred open position, and then press and hold the lock / close button for 2 seconds. The car will beep to show that it stored that location as your uppermost position.

It's a built in feature to accommodate different sized drivers and garage heights.

At the 5 level, do you think the back door will not hit the top of an average height garage?

shouldn’t be a problem. I’d stand close by the first time just in case. At the upper most position it’s almost exactly at my hairline (just over 6’). Add a foot for the remaining frame and your well under the standard 8’ ceiling height.

You do need to watch your garage door opener mount and garage door itself if open. Should be fine though.

At the highest level the hatch door is not even close to the ceiling of my garage. However, if the garage door is open (and above the car in the garage), the hatch door will hit the garage door so I have it set to stop a couple inches lower.

Same for me: level 5 hits the open garage door. The annoying thing is that level 4 is MUCH too low; it misses the door by a lot and is about eye level for my average frame. After banging my head a few times I discovered the custom height setting. That works well.

My issue is I'm too tall...even with the custom height setting so that it comes within a half inch of my open garage door, it's still low enough for me to bang my head on. Wish there was a way to tell it to open all the way UNLESS I'm in my garage.
