Default 90,000 mile maintenance schedule

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a used 2016 Lexus RX that’s coming up on 90,000 miles. I was wondering if I should have it checked out at a Lexus dealership and have some of the recommended maintenance performed. Do you think that’s a good idea or do you think it would be too expensive to have done at the dealership?

Go to the Lexus website and download the sched maintenance, see what it consists of and then you can decide whether to go to the dealer or indie.
If complicated I'd go to the dealer and if simple to the indie.

At 90,000 miles, I would take it to a local Lexus or Toyota dealership and ask for a tire rotation, oil change and brake fluid change. This should cost about $225. I would buy wiper blade inserts and a cabin and engine air filter on line and change both. I am a left-handed mechanic and it takes five minutes to do. This would cost about $50. So total $300 and if I would go in and ask for the 90,000 mile scheduled maintenance it would be over $700.

Do you know the service history...ie....is the vehicle in the Lexus system or do you have service records?

I would make sure that the ATF has been drained and filled (not a flush) and is in good shape. Same with transfer case and rear differential. ATF is listed as INSPECT in the service schedule and is "lifetime" but many would recommend regular changes.
The Lexus dealer will be able to give it the once over but they are going to charge you top dollar to do so.

As Cocal said, start by getting the service schedule and try to find out what has been done regularly in the past if possible. Enjoy

Thanks to all who replied. It seems pretty reasonable. The dealer I bought it from said they did the oil change and tire rotation and alignment. It seems like all I need to do is the break fluid. The trunk seems a little noisy to me when opened, but I’ve never had an auto open trunk before so I don’t know if that’s normal. The car is actually exceedingly nice. It has already pleasantly surprised me several times.

If it has been serviced at the dealer then the records would be uploaded on the Lexus owners site. Same for Toyota btw.

Normally, these are recommended intervals, check dealer if they can find records of what has been done to vehicle.

- Engine Oil & Filter: 16,000 km (10,000 mi)
- Brake fluid: 3 yrs/48,000 km (30,000 mi)
- Rear Differential fluid: 4 yrs/64,000 km (40,000 mi)
- Transfer case fluid: 4 yrs/64,000 km (40,000 mi)
- Transmission Fluid: 6 yrs/96,000 km (60,000 mi)
- Engine coolant: 8 yrs/160,000 km (100,000 mi)
- Spark Plug 10 yrs/192,000km (120,000 mi)

I just looked up the service records at Lexus. It says that at 85,000 miles the owner reported droning. Specifically the description states DESCRIPTION:BODY (WINDOW/DOOR) ~|~GUEST STATES THERE IS A DRONE ON LIGHT ACCELERATION. CHECK AND ADVISE ~|~ ~|~85502 CENTER PIPE EXHAUST ASSY REQUIRES REPLACEMENT PER L-SB-0003-18. I can’t tell if the repair was completed. But my research seems to suggest it was only covered under warranty up to 80,000 miles. It was the first time this issue was reported. Should I be concerned. I test drove the vehicle and I thought some noise was normal. I don’t know how quiet the rx should be. I thought it was just normal noise from the system switching gears. Does anyone know how much the repair might cost?

Well best of luck either way. The RX is a quality vehicle that I enjoy very much. I hope that you get her all set and have many worry-free miles.
