Default 2021 Lexus RXL vs Toyota Highlander Limited

Hi All,

I know that maybe compared a number of times in the past but we are doing some research between the 2021 models for Lexus RXL vs Toyota Highlander Limited.

I understand that the Lexus RX has the old architecture vs the TNGA for the Highlander.

Anyone compared the 2 and decided between either? Comments, suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If 3rd row is important to you, Highlander. 350L 3rd row is not suitable for any age unless you plan to sit indian style the entire ride. The extra trunk space is nice if you need it.

I test drove the RX without the third row and it drove great. RXL appears heavier so it felt a tab slower. Yes, extra space is always good. I wonder about how the 2023 RX redesign would look like. No leaks?

It's only 4" longer too from what I understand. Not worth the price and compromise in performance.

We sometimes have guest so having a very tight seat is better than no seats I guess. Moving all seats forward, we could fit the people in but not the best comfortable space.

No leaks anywhere on next gen RX that I've seen.

i'll get the Highlander only if there's no dealer markup. i will never pay markup on any non-truck based Toyota.

Also, the 2022 NX just released. I don't think they'd wanna cannablize those sales.

Good point but I think the target markets are a bit different.

The Highlander Limited AWD has torque vectoring. Does the RXL AWD have torque vectoring?

I looked extensively at the Highlander but the dealer tried a bait and switch on the price. By the time I got done dealing I was able to get the RX (not L) for just a bit more, so it was a no brainer for me to go with the RX.

To be honest I hate the lines and grill on the Highlander. The front end "frown" drove me crazy and the side lines are very minivan. I know some do not like the look of the Lexus (I actually like it very much), but I really dislike the looks of the Highlander. Granted, if the price was right I would have purchased, but the Lexus dealer was much more willing to move on price vs the Highlander. Admittedly I was looking just after the new model came out.

For me also it boiled down to what I wanted vs needed. The limited Highlander had a ton of options which I did not care about or need. I was able to configure my RX the way that I wanted and that also kept the price more reasonable. For example, I actually prefer Google Maps via CarPlay and therefore did not want/need factory navi. Also for me the size of the RX is perfect. The RXL has a third row that is just about useless....the L is only useful if you just want more room for cargo and not really for passengers.

Can't find the torque vectoring as found in the 2021 Toyota Highlander AWD Limited+ models though.

Saw this:

Why would any SUV need torque vectoring?
That's useful only in sport-cars in turns and curves and a sport-car the RX is not! 😱
