According to the versions and dates listed above mine is 2 yrs. older. Mine is ver. 21-36-17 (2016-06-01) where the ones listed above are ver. 21-38-17 (2018-06-01). I think I will wait and try to get the new one which should be coming out soon. Actually why can't we get the (2019-06-01) now?

Perhaps this is a dealer doing it in the hope to drum up business, but I think that what they charge IS ridiculous, $50 would be more than adequate.

I've always seen them as paid updates across numerous manufacturers.

The SD card is only used for updating the navigation maps. None of our cars come with the SD card itself. You don't need it unless you really want to update the maps, and even then, I'm not sure if Lexus has released a newer map than the one that's already installed in the HDD of your car.
As for the installation, I can't imagine it being that difficult to do it yourself, and the "buy a whole new SD card if you screw up" line sounds like BS to me. I've never bothered to do the map update myself, and I don't recall if anyone on this site has actually ever updated the maps via SD card. Hopefully someone who has had it done can chime in.
Edit: I should check for the SD card myself. Guess we do have the card in our cars.

SD card installation
My post got deleted so here I go again
I bought a used RX350 2017 from a private dealer. It didn’t have a SD card for the navi so I called a Lexus dealership regarding it. The guy on the phone said it will cost me 210 and another 210 for them to install it for me. He told me if I tried to install it myself(which is extremely hard he said) and mess up I have to buy a whole new SD card and start over.
from my understanding I thought all I had to do was pop the SD card in and let it install. Is this not true? Do I really have to put down 200+ just so I can have the dealership install it for me?
I know I have to buy a new SD card but I just don’t understand how difficult it would be for me to install it.

ask the tech guy or gal at the dealer, it's a sd card that pops in.
the older system needed a couple hours labor per my dealer.

Why do I think this is just a money making opportunity for the dealership. Considering that they charge $150 to replace the cabin air filter, this may be true. We need someone to try this. If you go to change your card on the navi screen it starts out with a simple instruction on removing the SD card. Of course I don't have the guts to try this myself.

The hell? All this time the card was so recessed in there, I just presumed it was an empty SD card slot. The stuff you learn after 3 years...

I guess I couldn’t find it lol I just deleted it now. So I’m calling around dealerships and everyone’s giving me about the same answer about having them install the sd card for me. Maybe I do have to just cough up extra 200+
