Not illegal, just takes the right paperwork.

When the exchange rate was in favor of buying in USA i bought a Toyota and a Lexus from US and imported to Canada.

As long as they are made in North America is take easy. Warranty was also good in Canada. Honda voided the warranty if imported. No issues with Toyota.

Often the difference has to do with if Canda and the US have different companies under the manufacturer. The money to pay for warranty work is part of the sale price and goes to that company. That's why VW of America won't pay for warranty work for a car sold in Canada through VW of Canada. The warranty isn't voided, just not honored by the legal company that didn't sell the vehicle to the dealer.
