I would argue the opposite: Hybrid engines constantly turn on and off. Every time engine turns on fresh oil must reach all parts that need the lubrication. Hence the oil needs to be of good quality with good lubrication properties.

Isn't the Car Nut, the guy who didn't think the RX was worth buying? The only reviewer of the RX in a field of hundreds.

That break-in oil is recommended to change at 1000 miles for the benefit of the vehicle, vice any monitary gain to anyone. This makes sense to me, so 1000 mile change it is.

I will follow Lexus's guidelines till warranty is over, then go back to changing once a year, we fall into the low mileage category, so our mileage isn't a problem.

Huh? Where is it written that the RX break-in oil, if it’s really some special oil or not, should be changed at 1000 miles?

Nope, I didn't say it was written, suggested.

"Former Service Advisor for Toyota Dealership
The oil that they put in at the factory, shouldn't be driven all the way to 10K. Break in should be between 500-1K, then do your oil changes every 5K or 6 months.
Toyota/Lexus say all their vehicles are full synthetic and can go 10k between oil changes, I wouldn't risk it. Power Train is only 5yr/60K"

(from the Canadian Lexus website)

This is a suggested annual oil change scheduel that I go by, carried out during a seasonal/spring tire change:
• Oil can deteriorate over time, especially with fluctuations in temperatures.
• Even if you are not driving as often an oil change is recommended at minimum every twelve months to protect your Lexus engine efficiency.

I dunno. A Reddit post isn’t exactly a definitive Lexus of USA requirement, recommendation or even suggestion. I’ll follow the officially printed requirements and take my chances.

It's not special oil. You have to use 0w16 in the 350h regardless of when you decide to change it. I use Mobil 1. The 1000 miles is a recommendation from Mr. Car care nut. He cut open a used oil filter after the 1st 1000 miles and showed metal flakes inside the filter which were floating around in the oil and caught by the filter. (use a decent filter EOM). The idea is that during the manufacturing process, metal shavings and metal flakes can dislodge from the engine during break in driving and end up in the oil. The sooner you get them out the better for engine longevity. Letting them circulate and clog up the filter for 10000 miles in theory would be detrimental. Whether you all believe his theory is up to you.

Default 230,000 miles of 10K oil change interval

Hello all,
I am waiting for my RX to arrive. Meanwhile, I have a 2012 Camry that now has 230k miles.
Since I bought it brand new, I have been changing oil only every 10k and it has been fine with no issues. Just sharing my experience and appreciate all other opinions as well.
Best Regards,

The filter is going to keep those particles from being circulated throughout the engine.

There's so many different opinions on when to change oil. If you research it 10,000 miles for synthetic oil is the sweet spot. I will always go by what the manufacturer of my vehicle state and the manufacturer of my Mobil 1 state which both is 10,000 miles.

If you want to prove your opinion is correct, Blackstone Labs will be happy to give you an oil analysis. It will tell you if the metal contents are OK and how much life the oil has remaking. Of course the manufacturer did this in testing as well.

This thread is one of the reasons I did a break-in oil and filter change; I didn't see any debris etc on the drain plug, and the original factory oil looked fine when I poured it from the drain pan into my recycling container. Definitely sticking with no more than 5k miles between oil changes on this car and documenting everything I do myself between the regularly scheduled dealer service visits.

Indeed, this does point to doing an early oil change on the car - I think I will do the same in a month or so (around 2500 miles), out of pocket of course. I'm too old to crawl under the car for a DIY.

I also did the 1000 mile oil change and will do again at 5000 or 6months. I did not find any metal shaving or debris in the oil. I was however surprised how dark it was after only 1000 miles.

I plan on doing the same thing- currently at 500 miles. Moving forward I plan on changing the oil and filter at no more than 5000 miles. Just because you can do 10,000 mile oci's doesn't necessarily mean you should. Especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle for 15+ years.
