I am using a Samsung 64G. I had to format it to Fat32 otherwise it would not work. I put mp3 on it and it is recognized by my 350h. The first time you insert it, it may take a minute to recognize and read it.

I put my FLAC, some MP3 and AAC files on a 256gb usb drive and can play them all. The key is to format the drive to FAT32 not exFAT and be patient while the car reads the folders.

The USB is formatted for FAt32, but the car doesn't read it (I tried FLAC and WMA as well, nogo) It works fine on my Corolla, so I'm pretty sure it's the Lexus. I'll reach out to the dealer.

My wife, who's the driver, plays MP3s off her phone (she has a few thousands there), so she's not really bothered about it, so it's not a major issue.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

Check the post above #8 from me.

Mine works with a 256gb drive. Check the steps above. My drive has around 12,000 mp3 files on it and it works perfectly so I KNOW this works.

Is there a way to be sure the car actually sees all 12,000 files and not just 9,999, as per the spec?

That is over 600 days of music non-stop 24-7.

9,999 is not a power of 2 so that would not be the file limit.

I'm just going by what's posted in the owner's manual and referenced earlier in this thread.

Good news - I copied some files to a 2GB USB2.0, and it plays that I'm a little confused, because I tried it before and it didn't work. I went to the Lexus dealer to demonstrate the problem, and it suddenly started working. Yeah, I know what you're all going to say.....

It still won't play my 32GB USB3.0 drive, but I will test further. I work in IT and have plenty of USB drives lying around. On the 32GB drive, I have about 1,500 songs.

It COULD be something to do with the physical dimensions of the 32GB, it's small, but may not fully fitting into the USB port, so never registers on the RX.

My Toyota re-reads the USB drive when the vehicle has been powered off for a while, so I have to wait about 10 seconds before it plays. Hopefully that's not the case with the RX.

I think you're on to something there. This is what I found.

1) It should be formatted to FAT32 as noted above. FAT32 can hold 64k files.
2) You can only have a max of 3,000 folders (i.e., "albums") at the top level.
3) You can only have 255 files per folder (255 songs per album)
4) You are limited to 9,999 files all together (I think this includes folders/albums also)

So I wonder whether auebank can actually "play" all of the 12k files, even if they're "seen".

Not sure I understand this part. Can you expand on this?

Thanks.

FAT32 (32-bit File Allocation Table), is file saving format used to save files on computers. FAT32 itself has some limitations, not related to music or Lexus, but intrinsic to the file system.

Wait, I see where you're getting at! I meant the file size of a single file is limited to 4GB. Let me fix my earlier post.

You can review further here if you're curious: www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/fat32
