RX 500h Unusual wind noise at higher speed
#46
Just had mine in for this issue. Tech wasn't sure what the noise was but confirmed hearing it. He was going to call the Lexus Field Engineer to see what he's seen/heard and if there is a resolution. Mine starts between 58 and 63 mph. The thing that makes me believe it's not wind and possibly inverter or hybrid related is that it's a constant noise and not variable. There is no pitch to it, just a steady hum or drone. When i drive faster it does not get louder. We looked at the hybrid screen and could not see any immediate correlation with the drive mode/cycle that the car was in.
yes my sound is constant (not a hybrid) but if behind a semi it goes away. Also sometimes wind direction makes a difference. I have notified my dealership and service manager has not heard of it but will discuss further at my 10k service. Please let me know what you find out.

I just started noticing the humming with my RX500h (just over 3000 miles). I don't remember hearing it when I first got the car. It starts around 65 mph and stays constant the faster I drive. I think it is somehow airflow related. I have been testing the situations when it occurs and it is pretty easy for me to replicate and eliminate now based on my cars position behind another vehicle. Depending on vehicle sizes, the distance behind varies (with trucks I can be further behind with no noise and for cars I need to be within a few car lengths to eliminate the noise). If I am behind a vehicle with no noise at high enough speed, as soon as I change lanes (about half way through the lane change) with no vehicle in front the noise starts. It is very consistent and reproducible now that I know the triggers. I have my 6 month service coming up and will bring it up with the dealer then. It is extremely annoying for me so I hope they figure out what ever is causing it.

Interesting. Everyone please report during their 5k and 10k services. If it’s not reported then it’ll be ignored. Good to know non hybrids are having it. Likely an easier fix. The more I hear it, it sounds like someone blowing on a coke bottle. I’m glad my wife hasn’t heard it yet (she only drives in town) she’d be ready to trade.

FYI- Several of us with non-hybrid 350 awd are hearing same sound at exact same speeds. I really think the issue is an underbody panel gap that is off by just millimeters, but just enough to cause this. Only real commonality across all these models with the issue is the RX body itself.

it does sound like a coke bottle! And I’m a female - 3rd RX. Had electrical issues with my 2017 so now questioning why I stuck with Lexus. I drive a lot of highway miles so it is aggravating

it’s not mine or I’d be pulling my hair out. My wife does 99% in town driving and hasn’t heard it yet. We are supposed to do a 12 hour drive in the summer. I won’t be able to take it. Hopefully there is a fix by then. Once you hear it - it’ll drive you mad.

A while back we experienced the same anomaly, but on a different vehicle. Although it seemed like coming out of the glove compartment or at times coming from one of the wheels outside, however, on close inspection we found that a piece of duck tape that held the recently installed windshield was the culprit. All symptoms triggered by wind and speed disappeared on removal of the piece of tape. I would check the whole grille area and behind it for any loose material or foreign matter. Just saying...

I still think its wind noise through the front grill. I have heard this only once on my car, and it was on a windy day, I think the wind angle & speed as I was driving that day was just at the right velocity and angle (along with the forward motion of the car) to create the harmonic condition in the space behind the (large) grill. If you open the hood and look down in that gap, you will see how large and empty/hollow it is - like blowing in the mouth of a soda bottle to make it whistle. I really think the solution here, is that the area needs some kind of foam baffle mounted in it to disturb the air flow and stop the harmonic, but Lexus would have to issue a TSB and a part for that.

Not sure how to pull in a moderator but we have the same thread going in the hybrid section. They should be combined as this is a broader issue that may affect all.

I just finished a 400 mile trip today - noise is consistent in starting at 58-65 mph. I did observe the noise going away when travelling behind a semi or car. At one point I was behind a semi doing 77 and it was whisper quite. Makes me think this is indeed air flow related. I do not have a front license plate on my car. Curious if the others that are affected have a front plate? I may throw the bracket on without screwing it in to eliminate the possibility. Maybe a plate will disrupt the airflow.

I'm going to assume that everyone with the issue is in America/ Canada/ somewhere that is snowing. Can't help but wonder if there's water/ debris sitting somewhere inside the front bumper that's not clearing. I'm in New Zealand and never noticed this problem. Another thing to try is taping up the wing mirror where it attaches to the door. Early LS 460s had a wind noise coming through a little triangle piece in the front corner of the door frame. Later models had this piece updated with a bump in it to deflect the air around it.
Or maybe all your cars were put together by the same team on a Friday afternoon 🙈

I'll report back later this week - below is from my SA:
have talked to the field engineer, We might have a fix for it. We need to try this repair procedure and see what happens. They have seen other vehicles do the same thing in other states. Let me know when you can drop it off and I will get you a loaner car.
The noise is air coming into the front air dam, that air dam has large flaps. Those large flaps make a humming or buzzing noise when you get up into higher speeds. We need to make adjustments to the air dam.
