Windshield Replacement Help
hey all,
i have a 2023 rx 350....about 5k mlies on it. my wife had a rock fly up at her on the highway and chip the windshield right in her drivers side view...
It's annoying to her...and to me. it's small enough where it's not spidering and it's maybe 6 weeks old holding steady. i finally called amica for glass repair and they outsource to safelite. Safelite just came out and they told me they dont recommend i repair it that i get it fully replaced. Is this them just trying to make extra $ off of me or are they being serious? He basically said if they repair it they first have to expand it before filing it with resin and after he repairs it when the sun hits it it will shine like a prism and be even more annoying than it is now.
Apparently safelite will do an OEM glass panel...but do i fight and see if lexus can do it? Should i be worried about safelite doing it?
If this were my older vehicle i wouldn't care i've had windows replaced several times...but this car is soo new it just stinks. What would you all do?

Ask the dealer if they replace windshields in-house. I bet they would outsource it (except for the calibration required afterwards).
Whether the chip is bad enough to replace, or not...ASK YOUR WIFE.
Could an auto restoration shop polish the chip? I know that some fussy collector car owners like their show cars to be polished, even the glass...

The dealer does not do glass repair...nor would you want them to.
Go through the glass company, check with insurance.
Getting it "fixed" is not the solution, only replacement.
You are going to get an OEM glass because of the cars age, and there's probably no other glass available anyway.
I was in the same boat many years ago, 2-3 months old, poof glass chip right in line of sight.
Don't worry, it will look like new, glass folks are pretty skilled these days.
They understand all the gizmos the car has and should make sure they all work after install.
That being the stuff attached to the rear view mirror.
Good Luck, enjoy the New Year and happy 2024!

I drive alot on highways and unfortunate get stone chops.
I've always had them repaired successfully and is done right you can barely see any sign that it read repaired.

Windshields cost a fortune these days - you have to go where the insurance sends you. Safelite is fine.

I had a chip turn into a crack on a road trip to Canada when our 23 RX 350h was three months old. Amica pays for Lexus glass if you request it. Safelite is only the administrator … you can have any shop repair or replace if.

Pole Position
Windshield replacements have become a major factor is everyone's insurance costs.

Indeed. But it goes further than that - all auto body work has also zoomed in price the last couple of years, I don't know what is going on, and along with additional auto thefts (which is basically legal in/near most of the big cities because its not prosecuted), is contributing to large increases in auto insurance. I also know that on Saturday at a restaurant, the cheapest bottle of simple wine at an Italian restaurant was $46.

Got a windshield hit today, the OEM glass is definitely thin in this car. Drove to safelite within 2 hours, it was already starting to spread. Elected to try the repair option because of the trauma of replacing windshields today (tech told me the camera work alone is $750). Not perfect, but I can live with it because based on what happened today, its going to break again "bigger" next time so I can replace it once instead of twice.

Good luck with your repair and I agree with your decision to try the repair rather than the replacement at this time. Sure hope that it works out for you.
At just under 3,000 miles I apparently got hit by a rock in the very lower center part of the windshield. I hardly heard it hit, couldn't see an impact area or chip, and just shrugged it off as no harm done. Wrong. About two weeks later, as the outside temperature dropped, a crack started to develop and worked its way first up and then over to the right towards the passenger side. My wife and I literally watched and heard it grow and spread at several inches at time. Living where I do, I am no stranger to rock chipped windshields; but I had never seen or heard anything like this. I think that you are correct- these windshields are VERY thin. I don't know what else would explain what happened to mine.
Since it is out of my line of sight, I a going ignore it for now. But it sure sucks to have this happen to such a new vehicle. I feel your pain.

My wife has had her fair share of windshields replaced on her vehicles. Thankfully nothing on the RX yet, just a small chip repair. I would suggest to take it to Safelite vs having someone come do it. On a previous newer car the person who came out scratched the car, hood, pillars, roof, etc. Another from another company in a previous truck didn't seal it correctly so it rained inside. If you take it to them there's usually someone there who isn't a field rookie. Also, take lots of pics prior in case something does happen and you need proof.
