Tesla and Rivian use RFID cards. They are "passive" and have no internal power source. The upside is these cards will never experience a dead battery and they are physically much thinner. The downside is the card cannot be left in your pocket/purse/bag and be used. You must bring the card into extremely close proximity to the reader on the vehicle -- essentially touching the two together. They're a good "backup" to keep on hand since they fit in your wallet and can work in an emergency, such as a dead/forgotten/stolen phone. But you would not want to use these keycards for normal, daily use.

Here's a video showing the Tesla card in use. Note how it must be physically touched to the B-pillar to (un)lock the vehicle, and again must physically a certain spot on the center console to allow the vehicle to be driven.

If you need to get that close, it might be NFC.

I believe the Fisker Ocean also has that limitation.

Not to be pedantic, but NFC is a subset of RFID. Splitting hairs, at that point, though.

Yeah np, I know, I've used NFC on Javacards. I was interested whether that's the case here.

Took delivery in December and still no key. Were initially told March, then April, then May. 8 days left in May - clearly not going to happen in May so we’ll be 6 months.

Really pathetic display of customer service by Lexus… Especially since they now are delivering RXs with 2 keys. Someone at corporate decided why **** off new customers when you can just annoy the ones you’ve already annoyed.

6 months on a 36 month lease without two keys is not really acceptable

Unbelievable - I'm going on three months - hope Lexus is reading this. Deplorable.

This was always going to happen otherwise every customer for years would get only one key at delivery. We still need to pick up ours. We've had our RX a year but the dealer is 4 hours away.

Gosh - hopefully by now, they have it? You're just not in a rush to make the eight hour journey

A vehicle manufacturer should be able to work with suppliers to surge output to correct for the shortage period. To not do so, to slow roll fixing the already-accrued missing keyfobs, isn't consistent with a luxury division of a really major manufacturer. It's poor customer service, not normally something associated with Lexus.

We had the oil changed at the local Toyota dealer last October and they could see our key was available but they can't do the warranty work. We're getting it early July when we go to Dallas for other things.

understood - but they should have eased it in a bit more. 6 months and counting is not acceptable when you promised 3

sounds like you’re making my point exactly…

Our letter said March 2024 … They start handing out two keys to new buyers and suddenly it is June and they are nowhere to be found

Quite pathetic
