Default Rear Seat Seatbelt Warning

Is there some special reason that the rear welt belt “three red warning indicators” stays on for 90 seconds after starting the car? No one has ever ridden back there. There are no packages or car seats. Is this trying to tell me something?

Are you opening the rear door? That's usually an indication to the car that someone may potentially be back there. Otherwise, just ignore it and enjoy your new RX!

Rarely ever open either back seat door. I’m ok to ignore the warning, but would rather know, for sure, that the long 90 minute warning is normal and not trying to tell me something. Perhaps one of those kiddie seat belt thingies needs clicked in somehow or something. There’s only the three red seat belt lights, however, on the driver’s dash. No accompanying annoying “dinging” that usually occurs when a seat belt should be used but is not.

Maybe they didn't put a seat sensor back there? Put an actual person back there and see if the light status is retained or escalates to a chime. If it remains with just the 90 second light with an unbelted passenger there, then you will know there are no actual rear seat sensors, and the lamp is just a catch all alert. I don't know of any car with rear seat alerts for this, so it may not be a NHTSA requirement.

Maybe someone else reading this will know more definitively. But I will have someone sit back there, first unbelted then belted, and see what happens. Good idea. Thanks for that reply.

Have a 2021 LS 500. Similar action- Three rear seat belt warnings in red light up(rear seat empty) then go out after 90 seconds. I believe it's a recent gov't mandate.
My old 2014 LS didn't do this.

Must be recent, my 2020 model year vehicle has no rear seatbelt warnings or lamps at all.
