I’m not a fan of extended warranties. But the fact that the house wins isn’t the reason to avoid them. The house wins on regular auto and homeowners and life insurance, too.

Extended warranties vs life and homeowners are apples and oranges. Auto coverage is required by law.

Agreed on all points. But the fact that the house wins isn’t the reason to avoid auto warranties. The reason is because they are a poor value. In general, if you can afford to drive, you can afford the risk of an expensive repair. If you can afford a house, most still cannot afford a catastrophic fire rebuild without “house winning” insurance.

Precisely. I misunderstood your thoughts on this.

That pretty much applies to everything you buy.

That really has no relevance to the phrase "the house always wins" as it relates to extended warranties.

Yes, but "the house always wins" is an inaccurate statement, as there are plenty of people who've claimed on warranties and been up on the deal. A more accurate desrcription would be that the house wins overall, which is entirely different.

I will grant that in many cases it's a bad deal, but for an older car, or one prone to certain faults, the odds start to shift in the owners favour, and so there's no one size fits all answer. Like I said before, buyers have one advantage over the house, that being that they choose if and when to get into a warranty, and they should do so wisely rather than blindly.

i have made out with every extended warranty on my cars i bought .

the problem is cars are more and more complex with cheaper parts , more costly electronics and time consuming trouble shooting when things go wrong .

that head unit in the rx today can cost 5k plus labor to replace

I've had two factory and one aftermarket. Made out like a bandit on the first one - $17K in repairs covered (Dodge); about broke even on the aftermarket one and lost a bit on the last factory one.

And you are right about head unit costs. Replacing the DVD player on a Grand Caravan cost the warranty $1500! A simple DVD player!

We will wait until a couple of years have passed to see if we need the Lexus extended warranty as we normally keep vehicles for a long time. I am counting on Toyota/Lexus reliability though.

I had a really weird experience of Lexus of Fremont. No one tried to sell me any extended warranties or anything for my rx 350h 2024 premium+. No one brought it up at all. And when I asked the guy to remove the ceramic wrap that was $1,000, he just did it without issue. I think they're trying to sell these cars before the holidays or something.

Car dealers need to move cars right now as the idustry slowed down quite a bit this year.

I'm buying the RX 450h plug in hybrid within a month, upgrading from my 2013 RX350. Just letting you guys know, I found a contact at a franchise dealer in the bay area that sells 3rd party warranties for all cars, but get this; for hybrids and certain cars, they have unlimited miles AND unlimited time bumper to bumper coverage that's good at Lexus or anywhere. I think the company is National Auto Care(https://www.nationalautocare.com), so I'll be taking advantage of this, because that 2024 RX 450H+ plug in will be my forever car.
