Auto electronics are behind the day they are introduced. Automakers want to use the most current platform available which is always your smartphone so integrating your phone solves many problems for long term usability.

Ford has their SYNC system. GM has their apps which allows the owner to monitor their vehicle's status and maintenance. Take a look at the Nissan GT-R system some time. Back in '88 I had a car with seven onboard computers -- just no way to monitor them. New vehicles no longer have a those massive wiring harnesses. Rather, they have the electrical wiring and a data bus connecting all the electronics.
Electronics will continue to play a larger and larger part in auto construction. Better ways to monitor and maintain your vehicle along with personal customization of settings, etc. However, it will also be a major point of failure. It will also cause vehicle prices to continue to rise at an increasing rate.
They no longer repair your vehicle. They only replace modules.
