RX Pulley recall...
I called Sewell this morning to get a price for doing the belt and pump at the same time as the pulley repair and was quoted over 1000 dollars. I reconfirmed this was giving consideration to the recall portion.
I would be interested in hearing the quotes others are getting for the same work. I know a couple have said in the 400 range but is that just additional labor or parts and labor. Let's try to tie down where the dealers are on this issue, call 'em an get a quote!

Got mine done for $432.53 while the pulley was replaced at Charles Barker Lexus in Newport News, VA. I had a $75 coupon from the dealer, so I only paid $357.53. This was for the labor and the timing belt and two accessory belts. Waterpump, idlers and tensioner's were not replaced. They gave me a loaner car, washed the car and filled the fuel tank. I was pleased with the deal.

Some cars need nothing but an inspection to check the pulley to see if it needs replacement. Some cars need a pulley. Some cars have a failing pulley (it rubs on the timing belt cover but hasn't rubbed through) and get a pulley, acc. belts, and a new lower timing belt cover. Some pulleys have failed and rubbed completely through the timing cover and get a new pulley, acc. belts, lower timing cover, and a timing belt.
Some dealerships are doing this for labor overlap with the timing belt/water pump:
If you don't need a pulley, you don't get labor overlap.
If you need a pulley, they do 1 hour overlap (1 hour off)
If you need a pulley and a timing cover and acc. belts (that hasn't worn through), they do 1 hour overlap (1 hour off). (This is very very rare)
If you need a pulley, timing cover, acc. belts, and a timing belt, they'll offer to do the water pump for 1 hour labor total. (This is very very very very rare)
This is common but not the rule. The nickname "stealership" applies to some.

Had my '04 done last week at Tustin Lexus. I only have 60k on the car but it is 8 yrs. old, so I figured I'd at least ask about the timing belt replacement. They said it would be $1700 additional. Said no thanks. Called South County Lexus in Mission Viejo and they quoted $650 additional and Westminster Lexus quoted $540 additional. The job was already started at Tustin Lexus so I just let them finish. They were very nice and filled the tank and washed the car along with giving us a new IS250 loaner. When it's time to replace the timing belt I'm going to do some shopping around. By the way, while the car was in for the recall, I had them do the tsb for the ecm and shift improvement. Nice change! I recommend it! And, they didn't charge me for the tsb. Sweet.
