The sun will eventually get any paint job, no matter the color. Especially if we're talking 28 year old paint here.
Maintenance will help. Keeping it clean and waxed will go a long way. However, as you have been doing, prevention is key. I'd do whatever it takes to keep it shaded or covered PLUS the washing and waxing regularly.
As a bonus, your headlights, plastics, trim and interior will also benefit. We are talking about materials that are almost 3 decades old and harder and harder to find replacements for. Keep them out of the elements as much as possible if preservation is your goal.
