Last night, an uninsured driver ended the life of my beloved SC400 with 237,000 miles on it. Damage is purely cosmetic and when I drove it to the bodyshop for an estimate this morning, I was amazed at how solid this car drives. They will likely total out the car as the fender is dented, the door is dented and there's a minor dent in the quarterpanel. But the cost to redo the body will likely match the value of the car. Ironically, the car drives like brand new despite the mileage, and on any other angle you'd swear it's a brand new car!
Frustrating too as I just did all new Supra control arms and ball joints, new shocks, new wheel bearings, new tires, new exhaust manifold gaskets. New transmission last year, rebuilt differential 2 years ago, and new radiator 3 years ago. I've always used Synthetic oil only and at the last smog check, the technician was shocked at how healthy the engine is. I doubt I'll find another car that will go 200,000+ miles and still drive like it was brand new!
This sucks!

Under any other circumstances I would. But the only time my SC400 hasn't been up for the task was when I have to take clients to lunch. The backseat simply isn't big enough. So I'm looking into 4 door sedans. The new Mazda 6 is a beautiful car and the price is surprisingly low.

RealRide,
Sounds like the car might actually be worth fixing especially with all the money that recently went into it.
You could probably drive it for another 100K and it would make it worth it.
So are you at a loss because the driver was uninsured? This isn't right.

Well believe me, I've been really torn about whether to fix the car or have it totalled out. As I mentioned, the bodyshop guy says it's purely cosmetic. In fact, I just drove home from a friend's house in it and the car just drives like a dream. With all the suspension work that I've done, it doesn't rattle or vibrate over bumps... feels just like a brand new car.
As you can tell, I really love this car. Yet, even before the accident, I'd been considering selling it to get something with a little more space. My other option was to keep it and get a second car. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to the car dealerships and kicking some tires.

My sc400 is making a little popping noise when I turn. Do you think it is my rack and pinion or something else? By the way, I had a pretty good vibration at 75 mph, I did some checking and found that my transmission mount was collapsed. After replacing it, It rides like a brand new car. I would have never imagined that it would make that much differnce.
