Help with bodyshop problems
Not sure if this is the right forum.
I bought a knockoff do-luck kit for my red '93 sc300 (don't flame). Then had it painted and installed for $3200, including major modification and dent removal. I chose not to "blend" the bumpers to the rest of the car because it would cost 2 grand more.
So the bodyshop mixes the paint to lexus code and installs it. When I see the final product the bumpers are ORANGE on my RED car. Well I told him this wouldn't do, so he's going to repaint only the front bumper to better match my car. What should I do?
The shop is well reccomended. Are their any stock orange sc's? Is it my fault for not checking up on the work? Can I make him redo the whole thing?
The kit looks well installed, aside from the color.
please help

yes, get him a statement from Lexus that there was never an SC oem orange color of paint. you're obviously dealing with idiots if they cannot figure this out. good luck to you and sorry it happened like THIS.

Is it really too much. I shopped around and I thought this was reasonable. They had to re-do the headlight area almost entirely. And I had one really bad dent fixed (about fist sized). I am just not sure if it is my fault for not asking to blend, or their fault for not matching better?

ANY good body shop could match paint. it just takes a little bit of patience.

Does that shop mix their own paint or have it done at a paint supplier?
Either way, even when you mix paint by code, you take a panel with you (usually the gas filler door) to make sure that the paint mixed by code matches up with the actual color of the car. More often than not, it doesn't and needs to be tweaked.
A good paint mixer will do it like this and try several times (adding tints by eye -- it's pure experience) until it's perfect.
Going ahead and painting the car even with the color way off is just irresponsible and an insult to you. They were hoping you'd not say anything and just accept it. DO NOT ACCEPT IT UNLESS YOU ARE HAPPY WITH IT.
Have him repaint it with a properly mixed color that matches your car. With the price you paid, you need to drive out of there with a smile from door to door in your SC.

Thanks, I didn't know what I was getting into. My car has now been in the shop for a month and a half. With the repaint of the front bumper, he says it will take at least till friday! I really cant wait to get it back. I'll post some pics of the mounting, I don't have any pictures with the bad paint job.
He gave me the feeling he is just going to repaint the front bumper (it's the most obvious) and leave the rest of the kit. I'm pretty sure he will blame me for not choosing the blending. Hopefully I'll have good news on friday.

You must be in SoCal because you are not going to get that price in NorCal from a good shop. That sounds like a good price even from SoCal.

Thanks Neo now I don't feel so cheated. I know I shopped around for quality and price. This shop was about average in their estimate. And yes it is in Nor Cal, about 30 minutes from San Francisco.
