TOP SCxxx Mileage?

When ours had about 250K on it, Is stuck a fiber optic borescope with an angled mirror to look at the piston walls. Was changing spark plugs and I was curious because I tended to burn about a qt every 1K miles or so. The cylinder walls still have their cross hatches from the original honing. It's unthinkable that they could have survived so many revolutions, but they did. The compression came out at 175 and event within 1 psi across the board.
That pretty much left PCV valve or worn valve guides.
After that, I switched from non synthetic t o regular 5w30 and that helped some. Then I switched from 5w30 to 10w30 and that helped a lot more. Lastly, I switched to 10w40 and the consumption is nearly gone. In fact, after 6K miles on a change with 10w40, there is hardly any change in oil level so I no longer need to top off every now and then.

Let me get this straight, you switched from synthetic motor oil to standard non-synthetic 10w40 and your major loss of oil consumption is almost gone? I'm just trying to make sure I don't do anything stupid. Can anyone else chime in? I hate having to buy jugs and jugs of oil every few weeks. Did you notice major oil burning smoke in the mornings before switching to 10w40? Has this changed any?
OLT, what are those red things on your dash needles?

been lurking the forum past few days.. i may be trading my 88 MKIII turbo for a 99 sc300 with 340xxx miles on it next week. he is bringing it by shop i work at monday so i can do a compression check and coolant leak test on it. from the pics i have from him on my phone the cars paint and interior and even the engine bay look like it just rolled of the show room floor.

I had a new PCV valve installed in June.
