I use Mobil 1 synthetic on all the cars I cherish and plan on keeping for a long time. I just bought a '92 SC300 with about 66k miles and love the car. I was wondering if I started using synthetic on it, would it make a difference or is it too late since the previous owner probably did not use synthetic? I do have all the service records and it seems as though she did do regular maintenance and oil changes.

Use the synthetic!
Only thing you may have to change is to go up a notch in viscosity as the engine wears... The lower viscosity can increase oil consumption. Higher viscosity will lower oil consumption on older engines.

Default synthetic..too late at 110,000mi?

hmmmm...I was told about 20,000 miles ago (at 90,000 miles) that it was too late for synthetic...that it was too thin and would not be a good idea.

If there is ANY inkling that using synthetic would be bad I would shy away...that's why I haven't started yet.

In reality, isn't it about the same to stay with my regular oil and just change it every 3000 miles? That's what several mechanics have told me, and no cars (to my knowledge) come from the factory with synthetic.

I'd love to see a comparison...probably will never happen, for example, of 2 identical cars...one going 500,000 miles and the synthetic one going 700,000 miles...

Synthetic has been proven time and time again... Many high end cars DO have synthetic from the factory. Off hand, I don't recall other than the Vette...BMW?

Oil not breaking down under temperature extremes is very valuable. Cold starts are typically where a majority of engine wear is. The oil is cold and not flowing particularly well at low temps... Synthetic gets moving quicker and protects your engine much sooner than dinsaur oils... At really high temps, synthetic won't lose viscosity and gum up your engine either. Turbos love synthetic as their bearings get extremely hot under boost. Normal oil will overheat and gunk up the bearings under these conditions.

If you want to keep your car another 100k miles, I'd put the synthetic in...

I've made a Cavalier go over 250k miles without any engine work by using Mobil 1 its whole life.

Default Synthetic...so okay to start at 110,000mi?

Thanks for your reply. So you feel that it's okay to start with synthetic even though I already have 110,000 miles?

What about one of those synthetic/dinosaur blends?

Thanks!
