The 99+ cars had much upgraded interiors, with a three-spoke wheel and more wood, classy shifter and better guage layout.
It really depends on what you care about. If performance and interior are top concerns, these years are worth the premium. If used-car value and reliability are main concerns, get an older one.

As for our good friend John (R.I.P.)........well see for yourself: http://www.lingenfelter.com/home.asp
More than half his cars were either turboed or supercharged and I'm sure he didn't use carburators for those, and therefore used electronics to his benefit.
I wouldn't call him a traitor but that phrase is used way too much considering the guy who said it was eventually swayed towards FI.
Happy Boostin!

Hi,
I have found a few cars I am interested in and want some opinions.
Car 1) 1993 SC400, 50,000 miles, white, very clean, family member has done maintenance for entire ownership, $12,000
Car 2) 1997 SC 400. 87,000 miles, red-maroon, clean, unknown maintenance history, $16,000
Car 3) 1998 SC 400, 88,000 miles, black, clean, unknown maintenance history, clean CARFAX report, $18,000.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Jerry

93 seems overpriced, even with the miles on it. I'd go with the 97 for $16,000 and just have it checked out. The 97 and 98 will have upgraded parts in the engines, I believe they are 290 or 300hp over the 250hp of the 93.

Of your choices, #3 will be the most fun to drive.
You might consider #1 (but haggle if you can) IF the interior is *perfect* (interior trim and upholstery are about the only parts of these cars that show wear, and they are a pain to replace), and you are satisfied with the power.

6K will buy you a '92 with 200,000 miles on it.
A mint '93 with those miles is well worth at least 11K.
Hhmmm...A mint, low mileage Lexus SC400 or a Chevy Aveo? Tough one.

Nope, because that's all it'll go through the auction for. THEN it'll be sold for 10k or so on a lot or private sale.
I could be spoiled since my buddy goes to the ATL auction every week
