Hi, my father owns a 1991 Lexus SC400 and his Power Steering fluid is leaking and we can't seem to find out what fluid to use. Anybody got any ideas?

Thx

On the 400 I think that you should replace ASAP. The fluid leaks onto the altenator causing it to go out. Unless you want to replace both, I would park it and replace the pump before driving it anymore. You will save yourself from having to buy an expensive altenator.

It uses regular power steering fluid, I used STP power steering fluid. There is no science in it. If you are leaking fluid I recommend the following:

Degrease the engine completely. Specially under de power steering pump.

Refill and drive the car for one day.

Park the car and check for wetness on the suction line, that is the line feeding the pump it comes from the reservoir. Also check the crushable copper gasket at the pressure line under the pump.

80% would be the brittle 90 degree suction line.

20% would be at the pressure connection.

Replace as necessary.

Money saved= new alternator and new power steering pump.

ATF Dexron II or III, automatic transmission fluid.
