I'm still trying to get some info on what might throw a code 12. So far, from what I've been reading, it may be a crank angle sensor - so I'll try and get under the car and take a look at that and take it from there.
Does anyone else have any idea what might cause a 12 DTC? I should probably try posting in the engine sections, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good news/bad news
good news: I figured out what the problem was (why the car woudln't start) and what was causing code 12 - no rpm signal. This code is thrown when there is no signal from the camshaft or crankshaft sensors for more than 2 seconds after you crank.
bad news: the reason it wasn't getting signal was because the timing belt was broken, and the cams weren't spinning. Looks like I'll be buying some parts and spending some time with the car this weekend.
Thanks to everyone that helped so far!

Not to get off topic, but rebuilding DSM ECU's? Must be the 1g's, right?

and yeah, you're lucky it's not a DSM or you would be looking for a new motor instead of a new timing belt
i think many will agree with me on this: if you dont know when the water pump was replaced last time, replace it while you at it, save yourself some troubles taking it apart twice
and dont forget the idlers and tensioner
how many miles on the car?

Yeah, I do rebuild the 1st Gen ECUs but I got a 1995 EPROM ecu for your 1995 GSX if you're interested High PSI, lol. I've been around DSMs for a long time now, and it is a huge sigh of relief that this motor isn't interference. I've had more than my fair share of engine swaps and head replacements.
I'm gathering up the parts for the SC this weekend and I'll hit it hard this Monday and see how much I can knock out. The only things I'm worried about is getting the crank pulley bolt off and getting it back on.
Vredniykot, I'll definetly be looking into the water pump as well since I'm down there with the front of the engine torn out - thanks for the heads up. The car has 211K miles, and besides the timing belt chewed to pieces, the engine looks remarkably clean and free of leaks, minus the ps pump of course. This is a true testament to the way this awesome V8 was put together to last 300K plus.
I'll try posting some pics and updating after I finish the timing belt. Thanks again for all the comments and help.
