I switched from premium to mid-grade on my SC400 over 200,000 miles ago. Have never had a problem. Don't notice any drop in performance, mileage still the same and never had any knock or run-on. Still I guess its only saved me about a $1,000 over all these years.

Default Gas Prices

Wow you guys are complaining about gas prices----------------------
Here in Vancouver the price of premium gas is over $4.30 Cdn a gallon.
That works out to $3.52US a gallon.
You do not need to use premium high octane gas in your Lexus.
Use the lowest octane you can without any pinging or run on.
If you experience pinging or run on then go to the next highest octane rating.
87-89 octane is not a problem for the V8's.

Lower octane won't harm our cars, but your mileage/performance might suffer *slightly* by it. I wouldn't be worried about filling with 87, even though to this day I haven't used anything less than 91. I guess the price difference between the two doesn't bother me.

The price diff between the variuos octane rated gas doesn't bother me as well.
It is the price of the base product that bothers me.
You should travel a few miles north to Canada and pay the prices we pay up here for petrolem products.
It is rather ironic that Canada is the United States of America's largest trading partner and Canada also is USA's largest supplier of gasoline.

I just bought a Geo Metro for $300 with plans to resell (obviously lol).

Maybe I should keep it, enjoy the 40mpg and slap on a sticker that says "My Other Car is a Lexus."

What is funny is that my beater is my Lexus.

I just filled up the other day and to quench my curiosity I used 89. I have noticed nothing so far but I do drive my car like a grandpa as I get out my aggression in the 240.

Well I'm a cheap bastage, so I'll share somethings with you guys... two things..

If you have Konfabulator there is a lowest gas price widget, you punch in your zip and it'll tell you the cheapest gas station and address, plus the ability to map it....

Or you can check out this website.. I believe there is one for every state..

My dad accidently put 89 in my car back in January.. I just told my fiance to drive it easy and not to push it until it was towards empty then put 93 back in it... It was fine from what I hear.. Sucks to be 1000 miles away from your car for 4 months

Im far from an expert, but i have had my 93 sc300 for 4 years now. And tried using the 87 octain after i had it 3 months probably, and it was pinging like the pga tour, and it wasnt my imagination. and it also doesnt like even premium gas from rotten robbie type stations -i made that mistake 2-3 times too.. the sc400 may not have probs.... If you can get away with it, i say go for it- But i wouldnt recommend it. And remember.... youve been warned!

The sc400's engine is designed for 91. I wouldn't advise putting anything lower in it. Do the math yourself, save a few bucks here and there, but what happens if you need to fix something in the long run due to the lower octane? There goes all of your savings if not more...
