Lower octane gas in SCs.

Lower octane gas in SCs.
With the gas price lingering around 2.70 dollars/gallon these days, I'm tempted to get off 93 octane and go with 90 or 89. My engine being bone stock, I don't think this will hurt my car but just wanted to ask you guys before. Anybody doing this?

i bet lots of people are thinking on doing the same thing with these gas prices and i bet some have already done so
but all i have to say is that Premium gas is recommended for our cars for a reason

i wouldn't recommend it. You're only saving what....$0.10 per gallen? So that in turn comes out to $1.50 per fill up on average? I'd just pay the extra $1.50 so you don't have to worry about anything.
BTW: I drove by a gas station today.... $2.80 at my local chevron. I knew i should have kept my beater car....

^^ HAHAHA. True. Now that the story unfolds like this, this thread sounds like a repost.
Everytime I feel her up I feel like i've been jacked. 46 dollars? And I get only 14-15 mpg due to all the city driving

I was thinking of the same question today. When i passed by the gas station, it was $2.71 for 91 octane (highest one in socal) i was like WTF. I thought about using 89 octane but then again, I will just be saving up around .10 cents a gallon and thats just chump change that you can find on the ground. So I guess I will stick to 91 octane. But one thing to say.. Gas prices are Ridiculous!

Wow, I gotta stop whining about our $2.44 premium prices, that $2.70+ is crazy!! Oh yea, just run the good stuff, give your car a tune-up (especially the ignition system, and maybe the O2 sensors), keep your tire pressures in check, and go easy on the gas pedal

someone with a portable scanner should run lower octane gas and plug in the scanner and watch the engine timing while driving(have an assistant watch) , and look for a diffrence, if i had one i would try it to see how much the ecu would retard the timing and such....

My mechanic has told me that these cars have a computer that modifies the timing a small amount to adjust for the differences in octane. I always fill up when my tank when it reaches half empty/full.
So, he has advised me to fill up with the 91 octane every other fill up, 93 octane the other times. (remember, I always fill up at half empty). This saves a little money and, so far, has had no ill effects.

Trust me, it is going to keep on going up.
With summer rolling around the corner you can only expect for prices to rise.
The octane of fuel can be a difference, if you have used it since you bought the car. (assuming brand new) and have followed up with routine maintance. If you guys ever get the chance, pull the intake and take a look, if it is sparkling clean well then giddy-up. If there is carbon build up. CLEAN IT!!!!
That will save you at the pump.
And seriously, until we are paying around 7 dollars per gallon (England) then we shouldn't worry.
Thank God I still have my old 84 Corolla!!! (get's 36 mpg)
Cheers!
