Default Saving GAS by ETC off ?

Miles / Gallon Average M/G
248.9 / 15.39 16.17
305.5 / 18.88 16.18
214.1 / 11.389 18.799
309 / 18.8 16.44
184.2 / 11.284 16.32
219.2 / 13.677 16.027
258 / 16.9 15.266
309 / 18.748 16.482
227.1 / 15.55 14.61
312.3 / 18.6 16.79
195.9 / 10.415 18.81
271.9 / 17.52 15.519
232.1 / 15.402 15.07
243.3 / 15.683 15.514

These are my recent gas consumption rate on my SC4. Almost of my driving is local city drive and I drive pretty fast. From home to work is 10 miles each way (all local with bunch of traffic lights) I was kind a curious also about this ETC, so I set it off few times and drove all the way to empty the tank.

14 or 15 are when ETC was on and off. (mostly on)
16 is when ETC was off.
18 is for long freeway driving.(couple of hours)

I just don't like the slow responces on tranny when ETC was off.
Since I did not see much difference on saving gas, I do not care anymore. I usally leave it on.

It became my habit to keep the GAS log. I reset the trip odometer every time when I fill it up. I write down the miles and gallons next time when I fill it up. This way I know exactly how much gas my SC uses, and I can detect immidiately if Gas consumption rate goes up caused by some part failure also.
Editting "Note" feature on my BlackBerry is handy

I use mine for fun, makes the engine sound good when those RPM's kick up....I like to think of it as my Turbo boost botten, like the one KIT has on Knight Rider..lol..lol..

With the 1JZGTE setup u dont really need to use the ECT, i never leave it on. Makes no real difference (some but meh not as substantial as in the lower hp 2jzge).

BTW that SC400 MPG sucks. I average 21mpg on both my 1jzgte sc300's.

ECT on/off doesn't matter. Automatic trannys suck either way you flip it (no pun intended...). I agree that the these cars are unsafe to drive in traffic as it takes forever to see any power, we're just overweight and underpowered I guess...? As for those of you getting 20+ mpg, how the hell are you doing it? I'd kill for that type of milage. For the record, I voted "Only when you are driving aggressively.

The sc4, i dunno how to get 20+, but both my 92 and 93 SC300's when were stock 2jZGE were both getting 20+, and still get 20+ with the 1jzGTE. i drive very agressive, all the time. Heck even when my 93 was stock motor and the tranny had no overdrive, i was still getting 18mpg doing 4500rpms on the highway lol.

its all in the exhaust. if you got the OEM exhaust, remove the rear mufflers, and make test pipes so the tips still are in OEM location. You'll see 2-4 more mpg. The car is no louder.

Mine's always on if I have more then a quarter of a tank of gas. On, and TCS off. How I enjoy driving. Not that I ever need it or floor it.

i average 20.566 to 21.89 mpg CONSISTANTLY, every tank, every week..

i do 90% highway and 10% city. when driving with my foot on the pedal, i get about 18.5, but thats only redlining 3-4 times that tank. i dont like to redline my cars much, and i honestly believe that the bigger the engine, sometimes the better the gas milage. you sc300 guys have to rev out more to get the same uumph that i can get at 2000 rpm..

case in point:
my friends Z4 2.5L gets about 18mpg, maybe 22 if hes being good
my old 330Ci 3.0L gets about 26mpg and 30.1 if im being good..

both cars have approx same specs and same driving habits, but that little 2.5 motor just has to work harder to make the car do what the driver wants..

just my .02

Default you can't turn it off...

i'm sure you all know this but ECT stands for electronically controlled transmission, meaning the shift points are calculated and controlled by the ECU. therefore the ECT is always on. the ECT switch when turned to PWR will allow the ECU to map its shift calibration to suit more sporty driving.
every time i have my 98 sc4 detailed the guy always turns it to NORM and i can tell immediately when i pick it up. the 1-2 shift is much to soon, approx 1850-2100 rpms with medium throttle input, with switch on PWR and similar input the shift will not occur until alomst 4k rpm. i get pissed cause i try to get into traffic and it falls on its face. it then takes several drive cycles to return to optimal performance.I have a custom intake and magna-flow exhaust, and i always drive with switch set to PWR, on highway i average just over 21mpg, in town and getting on it i will get 14-15.

Im confused to what people are saying here....

The "pedal" doesnt get any harder, your throttle doesnt change at all with the ect button.

Our transmissions aren't ECU controlled either, its wire driven. The only thing the ECT PWR button does is makes the RPM shoot up a bit before upshift, and quickly downshifts during a roll.

I haven't noticed too much difference with ECT on or off, because I still have problem with my No. 2 solenoid on my tranny. Once I get that fixed I'm sure it will make a difference. Usually I just shift manually if i need some power at the right times

i'll just answer that so the thread isnt left open ended...ECT PWR adds like 0hp. wait, not like 0, exactly 0hp.

My car is exactly like revlis240, 21 mpg norm. driving, 18 if I get on it 2 or 3 times per tank full. Now granted my getting on it is passing gear up to about 90 then back down not a 60 second brake torque. I also agree the power setting of the e.c.t. button prolongs the shifts by 6 or 7 hun. rpm, and downshifts easier.
