I just traded my 1999 Porsche Boxster in on a 1998 Lexus Certified SC300 with 32,000 miles.

Nothing beats the drive of a Porsche, but my Boxster was a piece of junk to put it nicely. It had 25,000 miles on it and it lived at the dealership with problems. Everything from transmission seals, oil seals, fuel injector, spark plug, air conditioning, ignition switch, wheel nuts, and even replaced the engine. Lucky for me everything was under warranty. I had enough of the unreliability of the car. I had just moved to Arizona and had started a new job about 30 miles from my house and needed reliable transportation...thats why I chose the Lexus.

My 1998 Lexus Certified SC300 is the Pearl White, moonroof, leather, Lexus CD Changer, Chrome Rims, Electrochromatic mirrors, spoiler, and has 32,000 miles on it. It will definately take some time to get used to the loss of power and cornering, but the nice smooth quiet ride is welcomed.

How many miles can I expect to get out of this car/engine? I maintain my cars very well and have always had all services performed according to the required intervals.

Default Cheech--Boxster Problems

I don't really know if the other Porsche's are problemsom or not. I know for a fact that the Boxster is loaded with problems...especially engine probelms.

Through Porsche Pete (online message board for Boxster owners) I have seen at least 100 different people posting that have had there engines replaced. Many of them had only 1,000 or less miles on the car. The problem stems from Porsche and the engines have a sleve that slips in the cylinder or piston causing engine failure. To date the Porsche has been the least reliable car and most troublesome car I have ever owned......needless to say I won't ever own another Porsche or deal with Beaudry Porsche or any of Beaudry's dealerships in Tucson.

Welcome Brad!

Congratulations on your new Lexus SC300. Too bad about your porsche, but if you ever turbo your SC, like many of the SC300 owners are doing, you will be like "porsche turbo who???" LOL!

Exclamation

I had some times with the 944 and a friend Father with a 944(951) turbo. Plus my Uncle has a 968 Cabriolet we have had no negative experiences just high$$$ maintenence. I still want a '88 or '89 951 Turbo S, 911 or a 928 S4. Ithought Boxster were ok.. Hmmmmmm

Maybe the quick to market Boxster has a few quality control issues, because of the initial demand.(though not an excuse for Porsche...)

Lexus did it right out the door with our first "Sports Coupe" and all models. Quality, reliability, maintenance, style, luxo, ride, etc...... No one compares to that period... Enjoy the experience!!! For many, many, many years to come.....

Welcome, several good comments above. I would add that the SC300-400s are the same basic chasis that the Supra Turbo is built on. This means that most of the HIPO parts, suspension, brakes, drivetrain and engine upgrades will bolt on. Aftermarket parts are also available including bolt on turbosystems. The Supra uses a different head so to use the factory twin turbos at the minimum you would need to swap heads. Options my friend lots of options

Congrats on the new Lex! You'll love it so much more than the Porsche...and you're really going to love it after you put on the turbo, and start spanking Porsche's all over the place. Mine only had 51k when I got it last month, so I expect to have mine for the next 10 years at least!

Had a 944 and flatnose 911 (935), really reliable cars, with the flatnose putting out over 400bhp I excused it for eating first gear one day and a clutch plate every now and then.

I seriously suspect the Boxster falls way behind the normal Porsche build quality, after all it's been built to a price.

Nothing I have owned is as good as the 2.5TT, it's got everything except 400+bhp but we are working on it.

Default Porsche

A friend of mine has a 1995 Porsche 993 and he also has a 1999 Porsche Boxster......he says the 993 makes you think the Boxster isn't a "True" Porsche.

He also had ordered a Lexus SC430 months ago and just got it delivered. He isn't going to keep it though, he is selling it to another friend of his. He said it is a nice car, but it isn't him.

Default Boxster Forum...

Here is the web address:
http://www.986board.com/board/986board.htm

Tell him to think long and hard before buying one. Engine go out like no tomorrow....It is a known problem with the Boxster and Porsche hasn't ever acknowledged it or corrected it.

If I was buying one I would wait for the 2003 model year...I think they are going to increase the horsepower some more so if you buy now it will depreciate a lot faster.

It is a great car to drive as long as you can handle all the inconveinences and problems.....I coulnd't since it was my only car and daily driver.
