Default Lexus Dealer - Airbag fix $440 - Guage Cluster Ground connection Fix - $260

Well as some of you may know the stereo guy broke my gauge cluster and nothing turned on. Outside of the $85 I already paid to have it diagnosed they said they wanted to look at the airbag because the light was on and its a saftey issue so they look at that first, and it needs a new "Spiral Cable" which I'm guessing is a clock spring.

They wanted $440 for this repair. I don't know how complicated the clock spring removal and installation is or how much the part is itself but can anybody give me a quick suggestion whether to get it done or buy it somewhere else and do it myself?

As for the guage cluster it had a ground wire disconnected and it will be $260 to go in there and fix all of that. because he has to take out the wiring and such and go in depth. What do you think on this one. I already went up and down the wiring and looked at it but I couldn't find anything.

My cars at the dealer right now so if anything I'll probably get the guage cluster fixed first. I know Lexus is overpriced but I just wanted to see what your opinions were on these prices for just going ahead and getting it done.

You should get it done at the dealership and have Electronic Express pay for it all since they f***ed it up.

Yea, all this trouble because I paid a "Professional" to install my $1000 DVD Player....rediculus isn't it...

Electronic Express is also telling me that he'll have to submit it to his district manager for approval for payment and to see if they actually broke it. I was like it came in working came out borken, thats the bottom line and its as simple as that.

I would have just the cluster fixed...but Lexus won't do it until I pay to have the airbag fixed because its a "Saftey Issue" Sewell Lexus said the spiral cable is a $305 part anyways. So to get the $260 thing fixed I have to pay $40 to get another thing fixed. I guess I'll just take it home and try to fix it myself, but I have no idea which wire is disconnected.

They told me it was a ground wire to the gauge cluster, anybody have any idea where that connects????

Well my dad just authorized the airbag fix (he decided it might be imporant to have sometime, especially after a few of my friends were just in a bad wreck). And to pay to have the cluster fixed but get a REALLY good write up on why its was worth $260 to fix it so I can give it to Electronic Express. Hopefully it will all be taken care of today also!

Update: They of course have to order the part so its going to be in on Wednesday, but they're going to give me a loaner so I'm happy.

Thanks but my dads actually going to pick this one up for me...not sure why he waited until now to make it an issue to get it fixed but when he gets things done to cars he usually just gets a bunch of things done at once. Plus not that yours wouldn't work but my car's already been in a wreck (which is why it needs a new one in the first place probably) but I'd just rather have a new one in there. I'll let you know if it turns the other way and I need one.

if they grabbed the illumination wire for your head unit and it was a positive ILL wire instead of a neg ILL wire, it will do this. After owning car audio stores, I know how many cars have both types, and it's a lot. have you unplugged the radio harness from the radio yet to see if it turns the cluster back on? I'd be willing to wager a dollar.

There is an ILL wire that goes to the head unit, but runs through a chipswitch in the dimmer ****, rather than a potentiometer like a lot of cars, and therefore can make it fire off a hot trigger rather than a neg trigger.

By the way, before you pay lexus al that money for these two fixes, you can always come down here for an hour ...............and try the reset trick also. http://lextech.org/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=67&

I tried the airbag fix reset, and there is a problem, could just never find where it was or what it was. I replaced the airbag computer which wasn't the problem...or could have been just one of the problems.

I did unplug the radio and I retraced all the wiring myself and the cluster never came back on. Normally I woulnd't pay Lexus to do this but I'm going to make Electronic Express pay for it all whether they like it or not.

AHH! Now my turn signals don't work.

They must not have connected something when they put the new spiral cable in!

The cornering lights work, but just not the signals, and the hazards don't work either.

I took it there today and it was there all day and they still don't know what it was. The tech was working on it from about 10am to 3pm.

Think I should tear it apart and look at it or is that just a lost cause?

I'm going out of town next week for about a week and a half so I'd like to have it working by then.
