Just picked up a 92 SC300
I used to have an RX-7 TurboII until the engine decided to die on me so rather than rebuild, I opted to pick up something reliable to last me through college. But, I also wanted something nice.
After about a two month search I finally found a 92 SC300 with 130k miles on the clock. The car runs amazingly smooth. Road noise from the cockpit is almost non-existant. The I6 is nice and torquey at low rpms and it gets pretty good mileage. Also, Lexus quality is extremely impressive the interior and exterior of the car is in great shape.
The car had a few defects though when I got it though. The keyless doesnt work, the passenger side door sticks, BAD when you try pushing it open or shut. And, its got that classic I cant see **** becuase my gauges are not lit at all. Unfortunately these are a bit more than I would like to pay for what they are, so it looks like they'll end up staying broken for a while.
I have a few qualms with my SC though. First off its automatic....thats no fun at all. I dont care what planet you're from, autos just blow. Then, the stock sound system is pathetic. It doesnt even have a freaking CD player!!! And finally, the overall lack of power and weight just kill me. I'm glad its my dd and not a performance car.
The best way to describe the way it drives is like my old MKIII Supra Turbo without the turbo lag, about 10hp and torque less, and no TEMS....or targa.
Though the L badge in the front seems to at least partially make up for certain shortcomings in other areas. Regardless of performance issues, its definitely luxury and is the nicest car in my family.
I'm still getting used to driving it. Definitely not used to the long hood or just such a long/big car in general. And the powersteering is a bit awkward. Heh, you have to keep in mind I dd'ed a 2nd gen 7 for two years, with no p/s, no a/c, and mods to hell and back.
Though overall its a really comfy ride.
...15 inch rims tho stock....what is that....seriously....

Holy ****, I just got rid of my turboII for a sc300 too! Got a 5 speed though. This will be my project car, and I have a sc400 daily driver.

Welcome to Club Lexus. You bought a 13 year old car so obviously its not going to be perfect. Your pass. door is like that because more than likely it needs a new door hinge. The gauge cluster needs to be sent to OLT and he will fix it right up for ya. If you hate the car that much, sell it to me

Congrats on the new purchase.
Most of the things you complained about wouldn't be an issue if you spent a few dollars more on a 400. More power, CD player for sure (a fabulous 7 speaker 12 disc Nakamichi system),
bigger wheels, ect...
Well, good luck with the car.

MikeFD3S, I would have kept it, but for now, I can't afford to maintain and mod it, it was just starting to come together too... got a haltech put in, hybrid turbo, FMIC was on the way. Right when I saved for a new mod, I had to fix something. Would have been fine if I could keep my sc400, I'd have a reliable car and I could have kept the rx-7, but I'm giving the SC400 to my sister soon, couldn't have a rx-7 for a daily driver!

Welcome! Check the remote switch under the dash; you might find it's just turned off. I bump mine unknowingly from time to time. Also, I'm sure you've done this, but have you replaced the battery in the key? Always start with the simple things...I know they're out there, but it's rare to see an SC w/o a CD changer (albeit, take it from anyone here; you're not missing out on much; they're total POS's for the most part) but surprised to hear you don't like the stereo system other than that. I've got the "premium" Pioneer system (7 speaker, 10" sub, 270 watts, 12 disc) and other than the CD player being gay and me using a portable unit with the tape deck (Wayne's World style), I love the stereo. It's got a good balance and enough umph to still hear it with the windows down, top open doin 85 on the freeway and "that's how I roll" And no, they're not the most powerful cars, especially off the line, but MORE than enough for average, and I'd even go so far as to say "spirited" daily driving. As for the guages and door, get used to it; that's the glory of the SC. Alright so obviously I'm pretty satisfied with my SC, and trust me-it has its' flaws...at least they're all cosmetics

Welp my plans for the car have changed DRASTICALLY...I bought a turbo from another SC owner for 150 bucks and am gonna go na-t. I think I can hit around 250rwhp for under 800 bucks. I'd push more but I dont wanna mess up my tranny. I'm running the auto. I'll definitely keep you guys updated though.
