Purchasing SC300/400: what to look for?
Hello,
This is my first post on ClubLexus. I would first like to say that this is an extremely informative forum.
Now onto my post. After totalling my LS400, I'm looking to buy another Lexus car, and after having a riding in my sister's boyfriend's SC400, I've decided that I will make a purchase of one.
I know that Lexus' are very durable cars, so what is a fair mileage to look for on one of these? I have $10k to drop on one. How is maintenance? Gas Mileage? What other information can I have on this car?
Thanks.

As far as gas mileage, theyre supposed to be good, but my previous car was a Nissan 200sx that got 40mpg , my SC300 gets about 1/2 that at best.
Maintanance , is a hard one to answer. these cars last forever if well maintained. As long as you religiously folow rec sev. intervals theyre as reliable as any car there is. BUT since you are talking about a used car, you may need to spend money in restoration, rather than maintanance.
The problems you will no doubt encounter, are suspension in the earlier years in particular.on the 400s PS Pump leaks are common, but easy fix, but can kill your alternator if you dont catch it. Finding a good mechanic that wont gauge you, and doesnt mind working on these cars is the key unless you can DIY. If you can do most repairs on your own then your good.
Im not sure if you plan to mod the car or not. But thats where youll start to add up the $$
BTW Welcome to ClubLexus!

first think to your self wether or not you plan on upgrading the vehicle then go from there. First and foremost i beleive these cars are the most reliable vehicles in the world second gas mileage is pretty good for what they are and shouldn't be a pain in the wallet. now if you decide to stay with an sc400 dont plan on modding it to much because that model requires alot of funds to get it to level that would be cheaper to do to an sc300. while if you have unlimited funds then go ahead with a sc400 which will allow you almost unlimited potential. i'd suggest going with an sc300 because it has plenty of potential if your budget is under 100,000 in mods. So look into what needs and wants are and decide which route you plan on taking. It'll be a little complicated but definately worth the time and effort.
