[sob] [sob]. .hmmm ...

[hours pass while Billy examines the engine bay of his last-gen SC400]

Billy wonders…..

"Why is this stock "cold air intake" ran into the back of the headlight?" "Why is this hole next to the foglight sooo empty?"

BINGO!!

Custom "True Cold-Air Intake"...

Notice how flush it appears!!! Cant even tell its there...

How did he do it?

Still not sold?

Okay, Details here.....

Lets see, what will we need.....?

Household Floral Foam
2x Fiberglass
Bondo (Optional)
BondoGlass (Bondo w/ shreds of Fiberglass"
Aluminum Foil (Extra Wide)
Black Paint
3x Glazing putty
Hot Glue Gun
Saw Knife
Dremel Tool
Cutting Wheels
Insulating Foam (1/4" block)
1' Square of Sheet Metal
Sheet Metal Shears
Needle Nose Pliers
Truck Bed liner Spray
Silicone
5 Minute Epoxy
3D Modeling Clay (1 lbs)
Good Scissors (No Safety Scissors )
4x Fiberglass Mat (Not Fiberglass Cloth)
15x Pairs of Latex Gloves
2x Roller Applicator Sponge (5 Inch Width)
4x Painter Pans
Heat lamp
Sand Paper (60, 180 Grit)

Lots and Lots of Space!!!!!

1) First you will need to remove the main headlight in order to have space to work

2) After that deed is accomplished, start shaping your floral blocks. Use the hot glue gun to adhere blocks together.

Create two sections to make this easier and so that you do not have to remove the bumper.

The lower "boot" bumper portion and the top tunneling section,

Be sure to remember the clearance issue from under the headlight. You will be reinstalling that later. Use the stock intake to measure the clearance you have.

3) After you have the 2 pieces roughed out to fit, fill in the gaps with the modeling clay.

4) Next wrap your foam in the Aluminum Foil as tight as you can. Remember to tighten it to your structure as tight as possible. Also place cardboard or foil under your work area for easy cleanup.

5) Fiberglass Time! Cut your Fiberglass Mat in 3" by 3" squares. This will make them much more manageable.

6) Prep your painter pan and applicator sponges. Put on your latex gloves.

7) Mix your fiberglass resin and hardener. You don’t have much time!! Work quickly as possible.

8) Dip the fiberglass squares into the resin 5x a time and begin to place them on your structure. Ideally you want to 2-3 layers over all the area. You can only do half at a time b/c you will have to flip the pieces to completely cover your structure.

9) Apply the heat lamp to speed up the curing process.

10) While you’re waiting for that to dry, go delete the pictures and emails from your new EX….. also grab something to drink. No alcohol, not now atleast

11) Flip the fiberglass structure over and mix more resin in a new painter pan. Apply and then apply heat lamp.

12) Wait for that to dry, go call friends to distract yourself.....

13) Take your Dremel tool and cut both pieces into 2 pieces. For you mathematicians out there, that’s 4 pieces total.

14) Use your saw knife, to sever the difficult seams. Use the knife the carve out all of the foam. Don’t damage your fiberglass mold!!

15) Sand the inside of the structures with 60 Grit Sandpaper.

16) Apply BondoGlass with latex gloves to smooth out inconsistencies.

17) After it dries, sand again with 60 grit to remove the highspots.

18) Use glazing putty to finalize any unsmooth areas

19) Sand with 180 sandpaper.

20) Paint with Black Paint, then apply 3 coats of truck bed liner.

21) Reassemble with silicone, then apply thin layer of epoxy to seams to ensure durability.

22) Paint all black, then apply Bed liner Spray to complete project.

23) Take units to car and test fit. Use a red marker to make your trimming marks. Use Dremel tool to remove excess and make a clear air tunnel.

24) Take Metal Shears to fabricate metal brackets on stock air box intake.

25) Reinstall front headlight and admire car.

26) Reset ECU, wash Car, then get dressed to find new “Mrs. [insert last name here]”

Hello Free Power!!!!!.... ........results soon….

Whoa, that is an awesome mod, it looks so flush with the bumper. Very nice and clean install

Great job, did you feel any gains from the ***-dyno?

Thanks!!! Definately. This would be hard to Dyno, b/c I thought about. I can split my model if I need to pour a mold...

then I could duplicate it

This is an obvious power gainer. Helps to fight that V8 engine heat build up. This means your top power regardless of engine bay temperatures. The air is low to the ground, so it is very cool.

Not to mention, that water is not coming up it. I used a water hose to spray water directly into it when I was washing the car. This means that this is better that the filter being mounted in the bumper.

You also do not need a "water bypass" valve as a result.

This mod decreased the 30mph "slow zone" and really screams on the interstate. 60-120. Yes, I do 120 to test

Free efficient mod.

I would bet that Lexus thought about this when designing the car, everything lines us a little bit too well....

Must have been dropped on the cutting room floor for "luxury" silence....

Sorry, I want more power

BTW, for you guys out there still with the stock airbox, this unit will still work by plugging into the stock headlight intake.

Little to no, modification.

For people with stock airbox, you have the most to gain from this mod. I wan't exactly starving for air with that 3.5" pipe

Any free mod is a recommended one.

..and yes, supplies dont count as cost; or your precious "time"

Update!!

OK guys. Being the tormented perfectionist that I am, I decided to "glamourize" my intake box., the upper portion that is. The lower portion is out of sight and would be completely useless to increase its image.

You never know when you might want to "show-off" when you open your hood

This was my first time working with Bondo, where I have a new level of respect for the people who did this.

This is Hard!!

The box did not turn out perfect, but after 2 days, I decided that I had to salvage my time and move on with painting.

I have painter friends, so those are not paint stripes, but a layer of gray primer, white base coat, torch red, masked lines, with a color of champaign to match car exterior.

Not sure if Im going to keep and expand (engine bay only) with the red racing stripe theme, or dump it completely.

I will need to consult photoshop...

I also shot a vid of it in action. Besides an IR temp gun, this is the best test that I could think of or replicate by myself.

Air compressor blower, 60 PSI into the air scoop. It was shot at night, where my pup maks a cameo, excuse me.

What do you guys think?

Video Test (60 PSI)

Btw- I can spin my tires at 10mph and chirp at 20mph.
