Default HVAC diagnostic mode

I have a 1997 SC400....I did a search and found a thread outlining how to put the HVAC system through it's diagnostic mode to show any errors and stored codes....because I have the flashing A/C light so I want to see what code I have stored....so it says with the ignition switch on to press the auto and recirculate at the same time and it will do its thing.....all mine does is turn the fan on....no diagnostics....I'm thinking this may be for the earlier models...maybe not the later ones? or maybe this was for the LS? Can someone help me out here? I followed the directions.

try holding the auto and recirc buttons while the ignition is off, then turn the ignition on while still holding them....
