Cool HOK Red flakes...

i was thinking about purchasing the Red Flakes from house of kolor. and mixing it with a clear coat and ahving someone spray my car down. I just got it resprayed to the factory red about a year and a half ago. it looks brand new. i have a '95 sc400 does anyone have a picture of a car with the red house of color flakes over the whole thing? what is everyones opinion on the flakes. i think it would look neat because i got the idea one day in winter when the car was frosted and when i moved i saw the sparkle in the paint from the frost.

The flakes are a great idea but HOK has several different flake sizes the create different effects in the depth of the paint. their web site sould have pictures

Sounds Great! I would choose a small flake though and also not go to heavy on the mixture of flakes, it's something like a teaspoon per quart max I think, you might want to go half that. Just shoot a test piece, you can always add more flake. Make sure you shoot a test on something that is pretty close to the color of your car already.

Default Mica

Valspar makes some great stuff. We frequently use mica's to achieve various metallic effects. In fact most paints, with the exception of aluminum metallics, use mica for the pearl and metallic effect.

I cannot advertise here and do not sell these personally but I can tell you that you can get exterior grade mica pigments for this type of application for around $25/lb from the same sources which Valspar uses.

Make sure you mix well and your guy has some experience working with mica's.

If you have some mica ?'s let me know.

how much do you guys think is a fairly good price if i supply the flakes. I just want the flakes to be mixed with a clear coat because i just got it resprayed. but the site said the drying time is like 30 days unless im wrong. that seems kind of long.

the only reason for a 30 day drying time is if you are useing a catalist and chemicals with a slower drying time. and their are reasons to do that but i dont remember why, i think it might havesomeing to do with the flake settling in the clear.

A catalyst will speed up the cure time. Perhaps their mica's are treated with something which interferes with the catalyst rate.

There is minimal movement of mica in a paint vehicle once applied to the substrate - unless the viscosity of the paint was incorrectly modified.

im sorry i stated that wrong. every clear uses a catalist and depending on which one you use you can change the drying time. there are also inhibitors that can slow the prosses
