Default OK, so this is odd. WTF year is my car?

I searched the term "build date", because that's all I could think of.

Normally after a certain month in a year, a manufacturer will begin to consider the cars models of the upcoming year. Ex: 9/97 would be a 1998 model.

My car is a '95. It has the '95 only 6N1 (Teal Mist Metallic) paint and '95 tail lights. '95 front bumper too.

I've got a build date of 2/94.

Is it just me, or does this seem odd? Does anyone know how to read the VIN to determine what's up?

I've ran into speedo's that do the same thing. Looks like they started putting certain things in the 94's pretty early, but described them as 95+

So, technically it's a '94, but someone on the assembly line got trigger happy and started putting the new parts in instead?

I'm gonna go try to find my CarFax from when I bought it. I have to put year stickers on cars at work (I work for a borkerage) and I've always gone by the tag on the door. Seeing this just kind of caught me off guard.

Im in the same boat. Mines a 95 but the build date is 3-94. It completly looks like a 95, but it has a 94 engine. I dont remember exactly which electrical parts are not a 95, but it caused me trouble when the damn thing broke.

That's pretty typical.. my old 95 SC400 had a 2/94 build date also. You can register your car at www.lexus.com and put your VIN in and see all the info of your car.

Actually this is normal for Lexus. If you remember the latest GS, RX, & IS, all of which were EARLY releases with a run of more then 12 months. You can find 06 GS with a build date of the prior year. My friend just got an 04 RX with a build date of 3/03.

OK, I registered my car at Lexus.com.

It's telling me it's a '95. It's just odd that it was built so early.

Is it possible that maybe the original (only other) owner saw the changes that would be made for the '95 models and just ordered one before they were officially released?

Soarer's were available in late 1990 at dealerships

I guess it took Mr Toyota a year to figure out if he wanted to sell them in the US or not.

I guess it just depends on when in the year they started releasing the first 95 model years. With my wifes 04 RX330, we bought it in April of 2003 and has a build date of March 2003. The good thing was we got to say we had an 04 (This was the redesigned RX330 so I know it was an 04) for most of 03, but the bad thing is we alreay had 15K miles before 04 came around. By the end of 04 we had more than 30K miles on what seemingly was a 1 year old car.

Doesn't matter the build date. If the highlighted digit of your VIN is 'S' then it's a 95. This digit tells the model yr. The VIN is assigned from the factory, so its designation is MY 95.

Early releases favor used car buyers. It will appear that the car has more miles than it should, but what would you expect when you start drive an 04 in 03. By the end of 04 you would have driven it for almost 2 yrs, even though its one model year old. My friend got a killer deal negotiating this angle. Most buyers never even look at the build date, or ignore it completely and look only at the model yr.
