I was going the route of cutting the cross bars but realized it would be easier to purchase a 95-96 front bumper and remove the center piece.

I was going to try painting inside the opening a satin/trim black, leaving the cross bars. It would take a careful masking job, but would do the trick.

i'm really, really likeing that. perry, nice touch w/ the sides off. may have to inspect
mine closer when it warms up.

Painting it flat/satin sounds like a good idea

If you're dead set on cutting it:

Im not sure if anyone has thought of or mentioned the fact that its a urethane bumper. Make sure you use the right materials to fill and finish after cutting. Bondo will not work well. Use a urethane / Plastic (Bumper Repair) repair kit and save yourself the headache of finishing the bodywork and then having a chunk of your freshly painted bumper fall out
