As far as i know, od is for fuel efficiency, it reduces, and this is what i think, correct me if im wrong, it drops your rpmage at higher speeds and reduces fuel consumption. hence y most people usually have it engaged. Like i said though correct me if im wrong.

OD is nothing more then a 4th gear from what I can tell. I think it evolved from the old days when 3rd gear was "drive" and when they went to a 4th, they called it "over drive" which was indeed used mainly for highway use. Now Ive even seen 6 spds called "overdrive" and all kinds of crazy stuff. Basically just put it in OD and roll out.

OD is considered any gear that is at a 1:1 ratio or 1:<1. it puts less strain on the motor while still being able to keep the car moving at that pace, hence fuel economy. for the 6 speed supras they have two od's 5th and 6th gears. for your auto 4th gear is your overdrive. They arent performance gears and if you have ever heard the "dont boost in top gear" this is why... your gearing makes the motor produce more workload to overcome such long gears since the transmission gearing isnt multiplying the torque, instead it is dividing it
