what if i were to buy the soarer in canada..have it registered there, titled, and everything..but then use it here in the states and drive it legally...would that work? i mean vancouver isnt really that far from seattle..i could have that car registered under my aunt if necessary..what do u guys think? possible?

Would the Canadian insurance be valid in the U.S., in my case Mexican/U.S. insurances, you need both for each country. I know friends who drive Mexican-plated vehicles in the U.S. for long periods of time without issue.

Didnt read the whole thing but thought I would let ya'll know it is easy to do....however it takes some work. I have a friend who imported a 95 skyline gtr to Michigan. Here is how it was done....

1. get the car overseas
2. pay someone to take it COMPLETELY apart.
- Engine out
- Trans out
- axles, driveshaft, suspension out
- exhaust out
- Interior out
- hood off
- trunk off
- doors off
- wheels off
3. Shove it all into a shipping container
4. Ship to major port (i.e. Jersey/Miami/LA)
5. Pay someone to bring container to your home
6. Spend ALOT of time re-building and fixing stuff hurt in shipping (mostly cosmetic for him)
7. Make sure you have original title
8. Go to Secretary of State and register your new Kit car that you put together.

DONE DEAL, car on the road and legal.

yeah but with a kit car title arent you only allowed to drive a certain amout of miles ... i thought it was 3,000 miles a year

From what I recall, some states are a little bit more lenient with regard to kit cars.

I haven't gone yet. My passport is expired and you need one to get in to Canada.

I don't think i'll be going because I found a nice 95 SC300 5 speed.

You actually only need a passport if you are flying into Canada. You can drive over there no problem without one. I just did it 2 weeks ago.

there is no such thing as a "Kit car title"
a title is a title ive had my car for well over a year and havent had any problems

to answer all other questions insurance is easy to get and very easy to make a claim on the insurance for grey market is cheap and pays good if your ever in a wreck.

It took me months before i found an insurance co that would insure me [ AIG ] in Wilmington, but now they say we just don't want to know! each year they made it more & more difficult to provide/more data/evidence.

Could you specifically give me name/contact info?

Question. Does the Sec/State inspect the car at different stages to see that the work has been carried out to a satisfactory standard? if not who is to know the car was a kit car in the first place, because if you can simply get any car over the boarder this would be the easy way to legalise your car, as opposed to the harder way...[ conforming a car etc ]

I found out that the Soarer is abble to be imported to the U.S. I will be bringing mine back to texas and i found that it is very easy to do. I went to the Texas DOT site and found a package that is for millitary members to import their cars to the states and as long as it conforms to the states and federal saftey standereds the car is able to be imported. Also the Soarer is on the list of approved cars but as a SC 300/400.
