My boss has a 1992 SC300 5-speed with approx 210k that he is going to donate. He says I can just take it from him if I want.
Problems
1) Needs tires
2) Needs brakes - pads/rotors
3) According to one mechanic, needs a new sensor; according to another, it needs new cats (two?)
4) Timing belt needs to be replaced
5) Clutch has about 25-30K left on it
6) Slight body damage on passenger side
Is it worth picking up? Can I make this a somewhat reliable ride? I just want to be able to drive it around once in a while, like a runaround car. I know right away, it needs tires/brakes/timing belt.. thats sounds to me like 2000 bucks right there. Im not too worried about cats as i can get the car passed through inspection (shhh).
TIA
Dave

Is 200K right about the time when the engine requires a rebuild?
Correct me if im wrong (i'm a honda boy so this is new to me), but the straight six in the sc300 is related to the IS300 engine and the supra engine?

word i'll pick it up if you dont want it lol, i could use a 5 spd ![Big Grin](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I'd hop on it if I were you.
Tires $400
Brakes 4 pads - 120 or so, if you need new rotors then add another 200 or so
Timing belt will be the big one (do the water pump too) - $500-600
All in all I'd say you need spend about 1200-1300 or so to get her to do what you want.

IS300, N/A MKIV Supra, 1-2 Gen GS300, SC300 all have the 2JZ-GE 3L-I6, and if maintained well enough, 200k is nothing to require a rebuild on this particular motor. It's bulletproof if you take care of it.

These engines don't generally need rebuilds unless its burning some serious oil, or you've done some serious overheating or other damage.
The IS300 engine is the same as was in the 300's, it has VVTi in it also.
A 5-speed is hard to find in some areas. I'm sure you could take it and sell it as-is for at least $2k-$2.5k, fixed up probably 4-5k

I wasn't expecting this response! But I think I will go for it. I have to call my insurance and see how much this will cost me. Anyone know any good indy mechanics in Northern/ Central Jersey?
