fuel light = ?? gallons (SC300)
Hi all,
My SC300 has a 'new' 34k mile SC300 engine (original had 142k+ miles and blew).
My question is ... approx how many gallons are in the tank when the fuel light comes on when on a relatively horizontal surface (either standing still or maintaining fixed speed)?? The reason I mentioned the standing still or fixed speed as anyone with brains knows that either ac/decelerating or up/downhill changes this dramatically.
The reason I am asking is coz I just got 'the light' driving home and when I stopped at the gas station and topped up, only 17.5 gallons were pumped. Standard SC300 tank is 20.4 gallons. Could it be that the light comes on when there is still nearly 3 gallons in the tank?
I called Lexus and I was told that they don't have any official figure due to varying results, but one can usually get 40 - 50 miles further when the warning appears.
One last thing ... can anyone out there who has an SC300 with about the same miles as I do tell me what kind of mileage they get from their car? I just worked mine out at 17.7 miles per gallon driving respectably in SoFla (no hills) mainly on the highway with AC on low virtually all the time. Is this fair consumption, or should I take the car into the shop to have it tuned or something??
Thanks guys.

17 mpg on the highway for a coupe 300? That sounds kind of low to me. I get 24- 27 mpg on the highway in my coupe 400 depending on the location! At cruising speeds of around 65 mph.
I'm getting 17 - 20 mpg in the city with the V8 coupe... I thought the 300 get's better mpg than the 400. There is a thread on MPG in this forum. Search for MPG or miles per gallon. Several guys posted results in the thread...
I hope this helps.

I guess I will be taking it in to the shop for a check-up ... perhaps tomorrow morning.
Thanks again for the input.

Definately get a check up.
I filled up today on my second tank which had a little more highway driving, and I got 20 MPG. With the 6 cylinder, I would expect that your mileage should be better.

also has to do with my driving...
if its 17mpg highway miles then you prolly need some fixin; possibly the O2 sensor...
i get 17mpg in the day to day rush hour traffic in mine... and not to mention i enjoy punching it all the time
i can only imagine what my gas mileage will be with a turbo lol

I used an entire tank tonight....and I averaged a whopping 11mpg!!!
Hmmm...thinking that +35% fuel to the entire curve on the S-AFC is a little much? Maybe it's just the turbo sucking all the gas now...LOL
Oh wait....I remember. It was the lead I found in my shoe
I did used to get about 25mpg highway tho...

The light should come on at 3 gallons reserve - this, I believe, is a national safety standard for all vehicles. Translation - you get roughly an average of 50 miles to find gas!
As far as gas meilage goes - jeesh, some of you are getting ****ty meilage. Tune your car up, or buy lighter shoes! I get 21 mpg in the city with mostly spirited driving. 26-27 on the highway. And I've seen 30 once on a long straight drive to Tennessee from Florida. And thats with a gas guzlin' V8.
Clean those plugs, replace those wires, and change your worn O2 sensors! And, oh, those 7000 rpm shifts aren't helping either.
