I'm interested in the SC300/400. I've been looking at the 400 just because it has the V8.
My question is, is there any particular year that is better than others, or are they all mostly the same.
What common problems should I look out for when evaluating a potential purchase?
Are there any specific "mileage" problems I should know about (i.e. engine doesn't last past xxxx miles).
Thanks!

I am pretty much an novice at the SC thing. I wanted one for years before purchasing my SC400 about five months ago. I am extremely happy with it, a 1996 SC400 with 23K mile currently.
From what I have been reading, the SC300 is the same car but very much slower, but has the special feature of adding a turbo which can really improve performance beyond the 400, which can not be modified that way.
Basically, what I have researched is that Lexus made the SC400 with bigger engines in '94, 96, and 98 model years. I am looking at the possibility of selling my 96 for a 2000 in the near future (soon as I get the money next month.)
As for resale, I think the resale of the SC400 is awful, which is great for us buyers but lousy for those switching to something else. I have no idea why resale is so poor as this is one of the best cars out in the market, but again, that is to our advantage as buyers.
For comparison of all the models and the model years, go to the Lexususa home page in go to the model library. Another great research source is autovantage.com where you can find great info on most of the SC models.
Good luck. Oh, and if you want a '96 with only 23K miles, I will be selling in two weeks as I have found a 2000 SC400. I want to increase the HP another 30!

I paid $29K just a few months ago. It is silver, chrome wheels with the gold package, Premium sound system with 12CD Changer, black leather interior. I have also put on the heat shield and K and N filter last month. Tires are in good shape and I have all records that the car was taken excellent care of. It belonged to a movie star (Linda Christal, not a super star)
I guess for a quick sale I'd take $27K. I have pictures that I can email.

I got my 92 sc400 perfect condition for 12,800, ALL options
2 days later I ran it into my garage door
a month later I ran it into another car.........
so much for my perfect condition..... god im a dumbass.......
as for the sc300/400 choice, the 300 shares the same engine as the n/a supra, so if your big on modding your engine that may be your choice as its easily turbocharged and you can create huge power from it. you really should only get a 300 if your looking to race, thats my opinion at least. the 400 engine is pretty much bulletproof. and if you get a 300 make sure u get it manual![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
about 15% were made manual
The 400 comes stock with some damn nice power, and there still are alot of options to mod your engine (only bad thing about 400 is that it doesent come in manual
)
I have heard countless stories about the 400 engine lasting ungodly amounts of miles without anything going wrong, and you rarely ever will hear anything about the engine breaking down, like i said its bulletproof.
I havent heard any bad stories about the 300 either though.
you can find 92-93s in great condition for under 12000 easily
hope it helps
