We can all say which ever model is better, but either way, he's going to buy a Lexus, so who cares. My OPINION on the conversation is this:

I chose the 400 because of the smoothness. The transmission shifts like silk. Most of the time you can't even tell it has shifted. The 300 had a noticable jerk to it and felt a little rough, like a normal car. The 400 just felt more "luxury". I only drove the automatics, so keep that into consideration. Also I only drove 3 - 300's and 2-400's, so there is a posibility it could have been lame cars, but I did drive 3, so I have a hard time believing they were all shot.

The 400 simply had MUCH more power on the bottom end. Barely press the gas, it flies up to speed. The 300 was peppy, but had to be rev'ed higher to get a similar effect. The 400 would pull hard and keep rpm's under 3000, while the 300 needed to stretch into the 4- 4,500 range to feel the same. I found myself punch the 300 all the time to get the power, while the 400 would just growl and get you there with a smile on your face. Reguardless as to which one was truely faster, I just liked the feel of the 400's power.

The 400's just sounded better! There is no replacement for displacement (except for the rotary!)

If you plan on doing some major modding of the car; the 300 is the way to go due to the Turbo'ing ability. But for simple mods, the 400 is so much smoother. Test drive them both, and make the decision for yourself.

I drive nearly a hundred miles a day, some of it in traffic, that's why I got my car.I'm not necessarily a person to own an automatic either,my other car isn't,and I can drive that on the weekends as it handles a whole lot better anyways.
It depends on what you want, whether you're going to go crazy with modifications.
