Question Plastic in front of the cluster has dots....

I just got my 96 SC400 yesterday and it has a few things I need to fix/update/upgrade/or replace (as usual in a ten year old car) but I have not seen this before....

The plastic that is in front of the instrument cluster that you look through that is curved on the ends to form like a half-circle in front of the cluster....well someone must have used some harsh cleaner on it. Like they sprayed it and now it has dots all over it. They dont rub off with your finger or cloth.

Any ideas? Easy to buy a new one and replace? Should I try a plastic polish or wax?

Thanks!

Try Meguiar's Plast-X.

Try and find one on ebay...or maybe a certain member who is fluent in SC gauge pods might have an extra laying around...

Search the classified too.

Thanks stokkd!

I prefer to try some wax or polish type project before I get to the point where I have to replace it.

It's in great shape, just hard to see through the polka-dots. No sense in replacing it if I can get rid of the dots.

How big of a pain in the **** is it to change? Do I have to take the entire dash outta the car and remove the steering wheel or what?

I just dont want to make a huge project out of something that is of small benefit. I am more about performance than anything.

1) Extend your steering wheel out towards you then down.

2) Pull gently on the dimmer switch/clock trim piece out towards you as well, it should pop out

3) Remove 2 screws (1 on each side, bottom)

4) Use a tiny flat head to pop the circle covers on top of the cluster, remove those 2 screws as well

5) Pull out and unclip...done

try the plastx first, should help a lot. Even light sanding with 2000 grit, then plastx will help.

Just got the Plast-X and gave it a whirl. No luck. All the parts between the polka-dots look stupendous but the dots are still there.

I will try again a couple times for a longer period and maybe being more liberal with the Plast-X compound. It was late and dark here so was hard to see what I was doing.

Thanks for all the help guys. Any other ideas are welcome too!

I have the exact same problem on mine. Looks like someone sprayed something on there to clean it and used a chemical that ws too strong. It bugs me, just not $77 worth of bugging!!

I use Monster Plasma screen cleaner on mine. You can find it online or at Best Buy for $15-20. Works like a charm!
