anyone ever stain their interior wood trim ?

my wood trim has had too much sun. most of it very pale. anyone ever try to colorsand it, stain it, and clear it? any tips for color choice? the pic is actually a lot darker then how it really looks.
i have no idea what color it use to be, but here's the passenger side vent. you can see the part that was shadowed by the door panel is really dark. and the side that goes into the door jamb is so dark you cant even see the grain in it.

another problem is the wood is actually sandwiched by two pieces of metal. then a thin layer of wood (?) is covering it on the outside? crap, i dont want accidentally sand to the metal.
