Default Upgrading the shifter to 97 + model

Has anyone upgraded the shifter from 92 to a 97+ shifter?

If so what parts did you need??

Thanks,
Scott

whats' the difference between the shifters?

mine is '97, and on the inside of the plastic, it seems as if the paint is chipping where it says the 1-2-3-4-5-R. how can that be? how can it wear out when you cant even touch the inside... any ideas?

Default yes....with a cost

I wanted to do this also, but I was told that it is impossible because of two things.

1. The jagged gate shifter will cost you about $15k to convert from the straight shift of the pre-97.

2. Even if you could afford it, you would then need to replace your transmission hardware and engine coomponents to reflect the switch to 5 speed architecture. That will cost you your left ********.

Can it be done .....yes. The question is, do you value your *********???

Default Shifter

I understand the trannyss are different, but will they bolt up in the same postion.

If so It may be possible to leave the first gear on the shifter open with no gear.

It depends where the electronic signal is coming from, the shifter or the linkage? I guess I need to get the service manuals out and see where the signal is coming from.

If the signal is not on the shifter itself then there should not be many problems with leaving 1 as a null gear, that the shifter will not go into. 2 would be 1 etc...
But, then the OD button would be another problem...****ttt.

I guess it wont work unless you make it 3-4-5 at 1-2-Drive then have an alternate hidden button for the Overdrive..
And the shifter will also have to bolt on to the older trannsmission.

I found a 98 sc in the junkyard, and I think I can get the shifter fairly cheap. I am going to look into it a little further...

C-ya,
Scott
