Default questions... retrofitting an IS300 cluster, or a 97 SC cluster

Hey, I wanted to take on a custom project, and I have a few questions.

I'm planning on splicing in a new harness, but to do that, I must know what the old one does. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1992 SC? I've seen the one for the 97+, but it's not the same at all. I've tried searching around everywhere, but can't find anything, as there is no haynes or downloadable fsm for these cars.

Also, I was thinking of retrofitting an IS300 cluster into the car, anyone have one that they can measure? I need to do some minor dremeling and fiberglass work, but I think it could fit. I just want to see how large they really are, rather than the pictures I see on Ebay.

Anyone have any other suggestions with clusters? I noticed a S80 cluster looks very nice as well, wouldnt mind fitting one of those.

Thanks,
-Freddy

The IS unit is VERY tiny compared to the SC unit.

really? It looks huge on ebay.

And would you happen to have a cluster wiring diagram for a 92 sc300?

I heard you're the go-to guy for that kind of stuff.

WOW. Thanks so much. Now that I know how small it is, I can definitely fit it in with some fiberglass work and dremel work.

Now to find the Lexus IS300 wiring diagram...

edit: I'm just kind of floored at the answer I got, this forum rocks.

PS- from an IS owner, AND SC owner..... the IS cluster sucks. It was made just like the rest of the car...... on a budget. It's dim, small, cheap, touchy as hell sensitivity wise, matches NOTHING in the SC in any way, and I'm sure I can come up with a few hundred more reasons why I hated that cluster in my IS........ Of course that's the wheat side....

............ the frosty side of me still wants to see you do it.

well, when i saw it in my buddy's IS, I just saw it as one of the most original clusters out there, and I've done a custom cluster in another car before, it was just a matter of connect the dots with the wiring, and adding the appropriate grounds.

Since the engines are pretty much the same, I don't see how they would be much different, sensor wise. I'll see if I can get an IS300 cluster cheap to get this project moving, because frankly, the SC300 cluster just plain sucks. It's the most dated thing on the car, and has too many problems for me not to consider something else.

I was also thinking about something like this as well, but I don't know how hard this would be:

DOOOO ETTTTTT.

well, when i saw it in my buddy's IS,
I'm guessing it was daylight.

Back in '04 when I had my hands in the cookie jar, The only thing I liked about an IS cluster was the ability to do dual color under heavy mods....... Of course only one was ever built, as I designed it and then shortly after passed the torch, but not the rights to do it.

No, actually, it was nighttime, but I didn't give it that much of a stare, I just kind of admired from afar.

Well, if it's dim, leds can always be put in. You can always make a cluster brighter, it's just a matter of making whatever's in there shine brighter than it already does.

I need alldata LOL, that way I can get the schematics for the volvo cluster, and would be on my way.

you're gonna hate yourself for saying that if you ever look inside one. LED's don't work on the EL design. You need a 360 degree spread to light the entire unit from a center point and if it does not come from one source it blacks out complete areas of the unit. It's designed like the BMW and Mercedes units. All glass inside transferring the light from the center. It's beyond a PITA....

Besides, this project needs something pimp, the IS unit pales in comparison to the volvo unit. "IMO"

yeah, I did some research on that, but I'm sure I could figure something out. this is a project car, after all. and I never did like the Trip/Odo button where it is. Kind of out of place and convoluted if you ask me.

BTW, this is the last cluster I did: 2k1 AE cluster in a 98 maxima: 30-something wires, piece of cake. Made custom mounts using jb weld and a dremel.
